I have an Athearn UP 3985 that I bought around 10 or 12 years ago. It cost over $300 and has some nice features but JMRI won't recognize it. It has the vendor as 64, Digital Bahn, but the version is 31 which makes it unrecognizable. Appendix A lists Digital Bahn but JMRI doesn't. In general, how do you set up a locomotive if you don't know what decoder it has? I also have some Life-Like and Micro Trains locomotives with the same issue. My really old ones, that I converted with Lenz decoders are no problem. Chuck
I am far from an expert, not even in the same city/state as the ballpark here. But in the past if it was a base decoder (no sound, just engine control). I have picked like the Digitrax DH123 or 126 and see if it would read anything on it. Then go from there if it opens up so you can read at all. It worked but I might have just picked the right decoder. You might be able to trick JRMI that way. Someone else chime in here.
Yes since CVs are largely per NMRA standard https://ncedcc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/200545049-Full-CV-list-per-NMRA-Standard-S-9-2-2 Then ya pick a digitrax 123 or 126 and go from there. It will at least let you do all the basic stuff you need.
