Well another Monday is here and a weekend is past.

I did not get as much done on the layout as I wanted. Saturday, I spent the entire day trying to organize bits of railroad items into the same uniform storage containers. Much of the items I was finding had not seen the light of day since my move from Northern Illinois to Central Illinois in 2007. Some of the boxes I went through were last ditch attempts to get things packed and moved so organization at that point had been thrown to the wind. Going through each box and organizing it into its new one or deciding to place it on e-bay took all day Saturday and most of Sunday. I would feel better if the shop looked better, but it looks like a bomb went off. I did run trains after cleaning track and checked for any problems since I have gotten some plaster down. Watched the Superbowl and was disappointed by the game. What's worse is I live in Jersey, so I'll have to hear my co-workers bug me from now until I can get back to Illinois. Oh well, spring training is starting soon.

So how about you? Did you get to finish any projects? Layout work? Maybe some painting and detailing work? What shows happened this weekend? Post your answers and show your results if you have any, we'll get together and do it all over again on Friday the 10th.

    High Greens!

Nah. As planned, we went skiing this weekend, and returned home just in time for the game.

    The skiing was good, anyway.

It was a productive weekend. I ended up carving and casting 9' of rockwork for the Kootenay river scene on the layout. And also painted and glued down the abutments, piers and retaining walls for the bridges there. On to painting all that rock!

I got another 12 cars out of bad order and back into the operating line-up. Also received a coveted package of small motors and Bachmann U36Bs for a remotoring project I have in mind (thanks Allen!). Then Sunday went to the Great Scale Train Show in Timonium, Maryland and added at Atlas Classics KCS GP30 to the roster based on a scouting tip. And harassed friends in BANTRAK. So a good weekend generally, especially since there was no Saturday night football to distract me (Though I hear there was some sort of imitation contest on Sunday).

i mostly got done what i planned to. Had to widen the gorge to accommodate the bridges across it. finished my first attempt at carving rocks out of foam with what i consider to be good results. Painted it all up and it looks pretty good, but needs a thin wash of black and about 1000% more moss growth to match the area im attempting to imitate.

I also started one of the grade crossings. once the asphalt (spackle) is painted ittl look pretty sharp.

I went to the Yorktown Heights NY museum Saturday and Inspected the temporary wiring and switch controls. I figured up what I need to do the permanent wiring and gave a list to the museums curators. I also looked over the rolling stock that the museum has for the exhibit. one of the locos, a proto RS2 has the thumping of cracked axle gears and they'll have to be replaced and some of the passenger cars will not negotiate an S curve in the trackwork. I went to my brothers Sunday to watch the big game.

Here was my planned list ....let's see how close I got:

    1. Experiment with Candy Streeter's idea of using liquid latex as a "paking brake" on a siding. I purchased some Woodland Scenics liquid latex and will start with a proof of concept using some spare track. I discovered another siding that apparently is slightly on grade for my grain elevator. I spotted some cars and rolled away the loco only to have the railcars pursue in chase. These cars had very nice wheelsets and are VERY freerolling (which is good). I am some older Bluebox cars with old wheelsets spotted there before and never noticed the issue. No biggie, will fix the minor problems as they are discovered.

Yep, I go this one done and it worked! Will probably add another layer of latex just to make sure everything will stay put. So far the spotted cars do stay parked but on one spur a little nudge will send them rolling and on this spur is a few lean areas lacking latex, so another applicaiton I think should do the trick.

    2. Continue to work on custom painted TCW GP20 locos conversion to DCC/Sound chassis.

    Did not even touch these.

    3. If time permits, will also work on BN GP20 conversion to DCC/Sound chassis if the TCW locos are successful. In hind sight, I wish I would have waited to have locos custom painted had I known that Walthers had DCC/Sound equped GP20 & GP30 locos. Also would have paid to have had the gazillion details parts installed. I am just not that steady handed for super fince detail parts. (big hands and not super steady).

Nope did not touch these either

    4. If I can get my rear end moving in time, finally make it to the post office to ship a few items sold and my two BLI SD9 locos with the fired LED's to BLI for warranty repair.

Yep, got this one checked off the list

    5. Order some decoders for six locos that are inbound.

Not only purchased some decoders (ended up buying at LHS, decent price) but installed four DH165L0 decoders in the remainder of my P2k Soo Line SD60 locos, installed plow, and programed the decoder with decoder pro.

    6. Watch the Superbowl and root for the Patriots. Will not be heartbroken if the Giants win as I am first a frusturated Vikings fan. NFL playoffs were great this year and both teams deserve to be there. I know for certain that either the Patriots or the Giants will win the Superbowl :)

I don't want to talk about this football game :( The Giants deserved the win it was earned. I feel the Pats could have done more and missed some opportunities in this one. But that is Football, there are always the few missed plays and the few mistakes that cost the game, it is part of the game. Even though bittersweet, runner up in the Super Bowl is not bad. But congrats to the Giants, pretty impressive end of season run.

Did manage to get some cars off the bad order list (12 cars) and spot placed the foundation for the Hardwwod Furniture kit on layout to make sure planned placement works. Will start working on this structure soon.

I received a portion of my package from scenic express and got down 1 row of grape vines in the vineyard. The results were good, but I have some better ideas now on how to accomplish this. So I'm going to try something different next weekend. Also, put down a few silflorettes here and there on the club layout.
I also went to the hobby shop and bought another Accurail kit I won't have time to construct AND got the Details West Log stakes to modify my flat cars.

Over the weekend, I finished my scratchbuilt HO model of CN 398000, an articulated covered hopper built by CN Shops for grain service on the Manitoba lines.

I got the benchwork for the first 2x4 module of my On30 sawmill layout done. I can't believe i actually got it done.

I borrowed some right angle clamps from a tool library in my area and I cannot believe I ever lived without such things. WOW!

North Portland Tool Library, to be specific. Did Portlandia do a bit on this, too?

    Adam-

What materials did you choose for your modules?

I went with the PNW-On30 recommendations for wood. I am using 3/4" Baltic Birch plywood, which Is a really nice material for dimensional stability. That makes up the structural and finished sides and ends of the module. I have 2x2 blocks in the corners on the inside for anchoring, and then I have layers of 1" foam on the inside that I have reinforced with a framework made of furring strips and strips of the plywood. I could practically stand on this thing, and if I were to put a sheet of 1/4" plywood over it I am fairly confident that I could stand on it.

I still can't believe I had never used right-angle clamps before. How did I ever accomplish anything without them?

After too many years of procrastinating, I finally bought a small one last winter. Nice- Very handy when building up structure kits.

I laid the final piece of track on the mainline and was able to run some trains. After running them, I've discovered I'm going to have to change some spots, particularly one of my grades that seems a little too steep, though it does have a 's' curve in it which may be part of the problem
