My brother took this shot from the window of the Western Star as we were east bound in June of 1961, traveling from Seattle to St. Paul where we changed trains to the Milwaukee Road's Pioneer Limited. Is this the lodge at Glacier?
Looking at some photos of the lodge at Glacier National Park it sure looks like it could be, but it's hard to tell.
Well considering the photo, and the fact it goes back 50 years, there have been some changes. There is more than one lodge in Glacier Park. To me it looks vaguely like the Many Glacier Hotel. But I have not stopped in that area for a long time. Haven't had a reason. Can anyone tell if there is a long "shed" type dormer behind those trees? If so, then it would be the Glacier Park Lodge. There were these two from the train window on the same roll but they were so underexposed that the scanner had trouble generating a good image.
Hey, thanks for posting those. Crappy pic' or not, they're a frame outta' time that you cant replicate. I have pic's that I can't even make out, but I remember them like yesterday, and they bring back the memories to fill in the voids. :teeth:
Just browsing past this one again.... No wonder it took a few minutes, when this was first posted, to recall where it was located. The train car from which photo'd is sitting at the west end of the concrete portal over the road entrance. About 100 feet to the right is the Glacier Park depot. Still looking pretty much as that day. A few cosmetics such as Amtrak signs, otherwise... The grounds are far, far different since this photo. An access road to the lodge not showing here. Flower gardens, many, many trees around this end and side of the building. Some remodeling, etc, etc.
Confirmation of East Glacier photo I took a picture of the lodge from the station parking lot in September of 2010. The mountain range in the background is the same but as mentioned above, the grounds in front have changed considerably.
