I have a couple of DCC ready Intermountain SD40T-2s that I want to install sound decoders and speakers in. I have identified the ESU LokSound 58721 as the most likely sound decoder I will use, but I am not sure what to do about a speaker for these units. Does anyone ever done one of these of have any suggestions?

I just ordered a couple of the ESU 58751 LokSound 5 Micro Direct Atlas Legacy DCC Sound Decoders for my Intermountain SD40T-2s, as well as 2 each of the ESU 15mm X 11mm and Soundtraxx 15mm X 12mm Mini Cube speakers to see which ones fit better. It looks like I'll have to machine out a space for the speakers in the fuel tank area on the locos, but other than that this hopefully should be a pretty easy and straight-forward installation. This will be my first install of sound decoders and speakers, so we'll see.

I have done about 10 of mine so far. For mine I used the v4 of the decoder as I had bought a good many of them prior to the v5 coming out. I have put led in the nose for MARS function. Simple 3D printed speaker.
The biggest challenge I had was getting the openings for where the decoder meets the frame the proper distance to grip but not to tight as to tear up the pads. I soldered the motor leads as well. The blue painters tape just holding down the excess led wiring and gives the fuel tank a little more grip.

Just came across this thread on accident. I have one SD40T-2 Southern Pacific. I installed using the older loksound 73100 ( since this was the only available loksound at that time). You ordered correctly on the loksound 58751. I've always used the soberton brand speakers for all my diesels. Fairly cheap. Get mine through the company Digi-Key. Google soberton SP-1208 That should fit your locos with no problems. I also have almost always custom built my speaker enclosures. Spend some time youtubing /researching styrene. .020" will be the thickness to use. Anything less is too flimsy and anything more eats up too much real estate. A good quality X-acto knife and a cheapy/fairly cheap dial caliper helps too. I have some pictures in of old posts of what I did and should be some videos of the diesels I altered. One of them is the SP tunnel. Good luck.
