Well, the sun had long set and the camera took a time exposure so the image is not very sharp. But I guess I still got my wish and a steam train was inserted onto those tracks.
Not too far from the Atlanta airport. Would have made a nice shot had a train showed when I was there.
For maybe a week and a half around the Summer solstice, the setting sun swings over to the North side of the tracks in Wernersville, PA, on the NS Harrisburg Line, providing excellent lighting for westbounds. I'd thought I'd heard the Lebanon Valley local headed in that direction, but misidentified its location. By the time an intermodal showed up, it was an hour later and the sweet light was gone.
Yep, this is an interesting time of year for such opportunities. I took this almost exactly a year ago on 06/10/2023 working the same as you, with the sun on the north side. I was also fortunate that the train running 12 hours late, else I'd have had nothing to shoot. I know we shouldn't post trains on this thread, but this shot remains a personal favorite and it supports your finding.
And a great opportunity to photograph that beautiful station building in oblique light, bringing out the details in the stonework, especially on the side opposite the tracks. Nice result!
Nothing on the mainline at Betws-y-Coed in Wales. Some old coaches at the Conway Valley Railway Museum. The museum has two different gauges for their "Mini" train rides.
Nice little spot! Three different gauges in the same view... Combining the three in the same track (triple gauge) could get interesting. And I'm not going to even try pronouncing the Welsh signage... Either my tongue will be in ribbons or I'd have a stroke...
Aww, come on. Give this one a try. "Next stop LLANFAIRPWLLGWYNGYLLGOERYCHWYRNDROBWLLLLANTYSILIOGOGOGOCH."
I seem to remember that station from an early 1960's Guiness Book of Superlatives. It also contained what was reported to be the song with the longest title, Hoagy Carmichael's I'm a Cranky Old Yank in a Clanky Old Tank on the Streets of Yokohama with my Honolulu Mama Doin' Those Beat-o, Beat-o Flat-On-My-Seat-o, Hirohito Blues.
Looking down from a new bridge at the track we just traversed. Between 1965 and 1978, the Ffestiniog Railway in Wales was rerouted along a 2.5 mile diversionary route. It was necessary in order to avoid the Ffestiniog hydro-electric power station and its reservoir. The Deviation as it is called in these parts was built by mostly volunteers. Here at the southern end is the Dduallt spiral formation in the fashion of the Tehachapi loop which is unique on a public railway in the United Kingdom. Including a bridge and a new tunnel, the new track gains a height rise of 35 feet in order to clear the flooded track bed and a tunnel, which was plugged near its usually-submerged northern end.
This is near St Abbs England. Some of you may know that as New Asgard. Sent to me from my son while waiting for his train which he said was right on time but neglected to get a picture of it. Kids, I tell ya.....
BD Interlocking at Binghamton, NY in May 1983. This was (and may still be) quite the spot with former DL&W and Erie lines crossing and a nearby D&H yard all contributing to action here. However, a long wait with a friend this day brought us only one train.
Binghamton used to be a very busy hub with DL&W, Erie, D&H and even some LV and CP traffic. D&H's gorgeous RF-16 pair were a regular sight, as were their PA's.
