Hello. What kinds of industries were located in The Bronx during the 60's 70's 80's and what kind are still located there today and serviced by CSX? Thanks for the help as this info is needed for a model railroad that is being planned and is set in that area. [IMG]

The Bronx is served by CSX in two yards.
The Port Morris Yard, and the Oak Point Yard.
Looks like some lumber facilities there.
    Not much else.
I will ask friends who know the yards like the back of their hands.

The only other industry outside the yards I can think of is the Hunt's Point Market.

I'm not sure how often, but the Salad Bowl Express (ex Conrail) comes in during the week with reefers full of veggies from the West Coast. When it leaves the yard, it travels along trackage you might think was abandoned! It follows the Bronx River for a short distance and goes past a cement plant (barges bring in the materials) and past a massive junk yard and then into the massive Hunt's Point Market. It's a single track until it reaches the Market. Then there's two tracks outside the place.

I don't know where the trains are unloaded. The Market is in several sections and I have only been in the meat and fish areas.

The buildings would be long two story jobs with many many truck bays. Also, high fences and security checkpoints at the entrances.

I'm not sure other than lumber, scrap metal, and maybe even cement works what else was served by the railroads in the Bronx. Whatever buildings you make, they are generally two story buildings. There are typical old RR buildings in the yards, but outside them everything is short. Mostly apartment buildings are tall. Not much as far as industry, was taller than that unless you model some old power plants along the East River.

And there are plenty of elevated highways too. Don't forget Yankee Stadium!

Try this site. It has totally cool RR pictures in the City. Modern era. Mostly Brooklyn and Queens, but it can help. Modern pictures of old old stuff. Check out the NY Cross Harbor ones. Best ones.

Forgot that coal must have been delivered there too. And there was a piggyback yard for a while along the East River. I think it was for RoadRailers???????

I know that CSX delivers to the Hunt's Point market. Other industries I would have to research.

I am going to email a friend tonight with that question. I hope to have an answer for you soon.

The Hunt's Point Market is about all I can come up with.

Thank you guys for being so helpful with this, as I want over to the forums on Railroad.net and asked the same question in the CSX forum, only to get stupid racial remarks and stupid comments. Thanks for your help! [IMG]

I just remembered CSX serves I think a New York Post printing plant near Oak Point and Stella Doro used to get rail service from Conrail when the Putnam Division was still in. [IMG]

Well thank-you Jorge for reminding us about the NY Post plant. I completely forgot about it! Right off of the Hell Gate too!

    Happy Railroading!

Johnny Trains its funny that you should invite me to Little Ferry as I'm there everyday. I work for the Susquehanna and I live in the Bronx! [IMG] I always see a bunch of guys at the Bergen Turnpike crossing and at the old New York Central train station at the Mount Vernon Ave. crossing. Where do you guys hang out? :D

    I remember you!

You told me about the GP 18's still on the roster!

We hang out either by the station in Ridgefield Park (not too much) or down by the bridge over the inlet. (my favorite spot!)

Did you see the photos Russ and I posted about Little Ferry a couple of weeks ago?
Check the Cattle Car and you will see them.

We should be there on Sat. You working?
By the way...........do you use the radio alot?
I heard a Hispanic man's voice when we were there. (not trying to be funny, just curious!) Was that you???????????

I also saw one of the 18's was back in Little Ferry!
By the way.......isn't Little Ferry really on the OTHER side of the river????????
It's really Ridgefield Park, but everyone calls it Little Ferry!

Where do you live in the Bronx. Maybe we can do a NYC TB meet someday. Well, over in Little Ferry anyway. Not much to see here.........

Oh, last night I was in our RR chatroom and a guy said, "I hear another UP going by".

Russ, (in Queens) said, "I hear the M train"!!!!!!!! LMAOROTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [IMG]

By the way, Russ has a two tone blue van (in one of the shots) and Louie drives a black jeep. You will know we are there. (By the bridge, we'll stay I hope).

Hello Johnny Trains good to hear from you. I saw the photos but I forgot to comment about them, they were cool! We have three Hispanic guys that work with us two of them have very heavy accents, I dont. Johnny here is something you might find interesting, I learned how to railroad on the New York Cross Harbor where everything was done with hand signals because the ALCO"S and the one EMD NW-2 were very loud, so to answer your question about me using the radio, I love and use hand signals, but use the radio when long cuts of cars are being switched around a curve. I dont know if I will be there on Saturday as being on the extra board tends to be screwy and I will leave on Sunday for Binghamton to go to engineer school. [IMG] Johnny you are correct Little Ferry is on the other side. I almost forgot to tell you today 1/22/03 we had a UP SD-70 come in with the big American flag on the side to be turned on our turntable the yard crew LF-5 turned it. Hey feel free to ask any questions about Susie or The Cross Harbor.

Jorge, Russ and I are Reserve Special Agents for the Cross Harbor Railroad Police.
It's a long story, but I wonder if you ever heard of our Chief, Harry.....
He is the Chief of Police for the NYCHRR.
I will explain in a private email asap.

Anyway, we should be there Sat. in the morning.

I was convinced that was you on the radio! HA! HA! Six Degrees Of Seperation........or......It's A Small World After All..............
