In the past couple of years I have been working with an HO layout. Well recently I purchased an older model N scale from an auction on Yahoo. It is a very nice older model but I have one problem. I did not recieve the transformer/power supply with it. I was wondering if any one could point me in the right direction for a simple transformer for this one train simple N scale layout. I wasn't sure what I need to look for in voltage or amperage for this supply. I didn't think that I could use my HO supply for this smaller train but I wanted to ask someone who is more knowledgable than I, as I don't want to ruin this little N scale train. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Answer here or you can e-mail me directly if you choose. Thanks in advance for all your help folks.

    Jim,
First of all, welcome to Trainboard!! Always good to see new folks around here!! I guess it depends on what type of power supply you have for your HO scale. I know in the 1970's manufacturers made power supplies for HO and N separately, but that is not so much the case anymore. I would suggest looking at the products by MRC for simple train operation. Keep in mind though that you may want to expand from one train to an empire [IMG] [IMG]!! Also look on E-Bay for some of the older MRC Tech II power packs. These are pretty good and with DCC being all the rage, you can usually pick them up fairly cheaply. Good luck, and let us know haow it goes!! Happy Modeling!!

Hello Jim, a warm welcome to Trainboard. You will not find a friendlier or more helpful place on the net [IMG]

Good advice from John. When I first switched from HO to N, I used the same power supply and controller (throttle). But as this was a feedback type, I changed to a smoother unit, with simulator, but like a lot of others I am about to change to DCC. (Have to save up!)

Good luck, and let us know how you get on [IMG]

    Greetings
You can use your HO power pack for N-Scale. Everything will do just fine. It would be better to get an add on throttle that would connect up to your pack and run N-Scale through the add on throttle. N-Scale engines don't need near as much power to run as HO engines do. Check at your local hobby shop for a MRC add on tranistor throttle. It will really help an N-Scale engine run smooth.
Please note that some early made N-Scale engines did not run worth a hoot and no tranistor throttle in the world will help them run any better.

Welcome to the TrainBoard Twotots! As you see we are all friendly here, (except one old geezer who had better remain un-named), and as you see these guys are very knowledgabubale, depending on how much they have had. I really can't add to the good advice, because I'm in steam, or is it steamed? Anyway, glad to have you here, tell us about the layouts, send photos, and money! [IMG]

I don't know how long you have been monitoring TrainBoard but I have been for several months before I joined and believe me it is well worth it.

I would like to thank you all for your time and your consideration. I am grateful for your help. And you all are correct - this sure is a friendly place. Now for my next question? Where is a good, economical place to shop for accesories and for ideas for starting out with a small tabletop layout? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Again, thank you all for making me feel so welcome. And thank you for the sage advice.

    God Bless.
