So I saw this on the news where a train stopped in a crossing for food while traffic was waiting. hboy: http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2015...to-wait-while-train-engineer-brakes-for-food/
Rats. It says "video unavailable." Somehow I would find it difficult to accept any person doing something like this as being the right person for the job... It would be interesting to know what, if anything happens.
Ha! I immediately thought of this oldie from 2003: Traffic waits while train stops for coffee run -Mike
Oh thats weird. I don't understand why you can't see the video. I tried it a couple of times and it works everytime even with my AdBlock program running.
It worked when I tried this time. This certainly shows us some folks who've flunked using any common sense.
I used to live by a short line, and the crew would almost always stop across the street from a certain convenience stop to run in and grab a drink. The crews I worked with always brought food with!
I remember a time when I was riding with a friend of mine and he got a call from his BNSF engineer brother in desperate need of food because they had already ate their lunches. The train was held up for about 4 hrs due to an accident or something farther up the line. So my friend took orders from the crew and we went to McDonalds for them, but they were stopped way out in the dessert with nothing but coyotes and rattle snakes. I have to say that the crew sure was grateful when we showed up.
When I was doing research on an article I was writing on the Kiamichi Railroad, I was allowed to ride along with the road's Madill Turn, Hugo-Madill and return (the road's BN interchange, all ex-Frisco). As we were heading west, we stopped at a wide spot in the road called Bokchito, just shy of the road crossing, got off the locomotive, and went to a nearby convenience store to grab some tasty homemade sandwiches. They sure tasted great as we resumed our westward journey to Madill......
This was a local turn around. They were headed to a mill for a pick up. This crossing usually has EXTREMELY low traffic and this crew runs only about once a week if that. Lumber all comes in by train there. This guys an optometrist not a heart surgeon. I've had crews on locals stop their train to let my ambulance through on an emergency. This guys full of it.lol
They still should not have blocked the street. Should have stopped short of the signal circuit, or quickly dumped the guy off and backed away.
Forty+/- years ago an L&N/Family Lines, whatever, eastbound out of the Big Easy stopped short of Gulfport's (MS) 38th Ave. crossing and a guy ran into a little Mom-n-Pop grocery that made the best Po-Boys outside of N'Awlins, maybe better. Shortly he came running out with a humongous bag and a twelve-pack of Coke. Within seconds the four SD's belched smoke and they were on their way. To their credit, they only blocked three crossings that were later closed within a year or two, but Broad Ave., the hospital access was clear. However, that was my first experience with..."Gee, crews have to eat too".
I don't have a problem with a train crew member stopping for food as much as they're unnecessarily blocking a grade crossing. Here's a different UP train making a crew change while blocking a grade crossing: <em>
