I have a number of boxcars with the bottom step broken off. How do you repair or replace these steps? What material to use? Is there a how to video that shows this? Thanks in Advance

Detail Associates makes a number of sets of replacement stirrups. From the look of them it's a matter of drill holes and glue in place.

A very robust approach is to use A-Line steps. They are Brass, you drill some holes and glue in place. Just google "A-line freight car steps" and you can see the different kind of steps available. Or you could bend your own, it is not difficult at all.

I have a package of the A-Line stirups, Tom is exactly right. I think the wire size is perfect for HO.

Yarmouth Model Works makes a number of eteched sill steps for various cars that A-Line sill steps may not work real well on. I just ordered some for some cars I will be building in the near future and to repair some where the plastic ones broke off, especially the ones for the Proto 2000 box cars.

Ah. That explains why we see such nice results in the model photos you post.
