    Hello all,
I just completed a conversion that some on
the board have been asking about- a HH EMD unit. I have spliced the SD35 onto a GP40 frame/chassis and the results are better than that of Cannon and many of the HO scale efforts I have seen. Please take a look at: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=472053 - and let me know what y'all think. Of course you Conrail fans may consider this sacriledge(sic- I just love phonetics) ,but don't worry all of you CB&Q, CNW, and BN fans will be next. [IMG] I am glad to answer any questions anyone may have and please feel free to post here or email me directly. Looks like another great Atlas product yields even more possibiltes-next up a
SD40-2 and GP35 once the wallet cools down. Y'all have a good one, Justin

Looks like there are no wasted parts with this conversion. You get a HH GP40 and still can put together a Low Hood SD35 just by switching cabs. Nothing wasted!! How cool!

Just a note on construction, yes, you have seperate carbody and cab, but with the portion of the original cab filed of to support the HH assembly, this makes for one nasty looking gap near the lower portion directly behind the cab [IMG] The only other option is to use the cab assembly and some .20 evergreen styrene to fill the gap and then putty over it- which sounds like more work than is needed, but none the less you do have a spare cab and spare carbody. I am thinking of using the carbodies for another project involving GHQ lowboys and a Detail associates EMD PM for a scene on the layout- once the benchwok and the like are completed- wishful thinking on my part for the time being. But anyhow, Atlas has produced a fine body and a helpful part to us NS,N&W,and SOU modelers out here in N scale. Just need to find some GP38s and GP50s now at a decent price [IMG] Y'all have a good one, Justin

    Catt,
I did in fact order them directly from Atlas, and total in parts was around $5.00 for all of the parts per unit. I went in with a friend who ordered them, so I do not have the part number for the shell- my guess is just to directly email Atlas and they will email you back with the numbers and price. The parts are the HH shell assembly (I think around 2.50) and the cab ($1.00) and the lights/numberboards (part number 494281-10- I think around $2.00). Hope this helps and I will try to find out the numbers for you and post them here once I know for sure. Have a good one, Justin

    Justin,

Couldn't you just cut through the centre of the cab area and swap the noses? I do this with LH GP20's and HH GP9's to create the HH GP20's and 'kit' rebuild LH GP9's. It requires a splice plate tio hold the parts together that is inside the cab. Thought this would be an easy way for doing the HH conversions.

I had a look at the PhotoPoint pics you posted. The conversion looks great. I'm awaiting the finished product as well. How about a photo essay on the conversion. [IMG]

    Howdy,
I'm Justin's N&W\NS modeling buddy in Tampa. The parts that I ordered from Atlas for the conversion are:
    494252 Cab- $1.00 each
    494250 High nose SD35 body - $2.50 each
    494281 High nose bell - .35cents each
494255 Headlight high nose unit - .35cents each
485203 Cab glazing set -.70cents each

I did my conversion in about 30 minutes while Justin was working on his Top Gon prototype. Easiest conversion I have ever done. I am hoping to finish it up this weekend and post some pictures to my photopoint album. I did pull out a Kato GP50 and SD45 that have been waiting for my local distributor to restock Athabasca hoods and it looks like the Atlas parts will fit fine. Guess this means no more bending metal.....
The cutting the parts off in the cab area idea is a great one. Thanks for the tip.
    Greg
