    Hi All

Just joined up to this Forum, been watching and reading for a little while. Time to sign up and contribute where I can.

I'm a bit of a traveller, first 22 years in London UK, then 20 years living and working all around Australia, last 17 years in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

I have always worked in the Rail Industry, Signal and Comms Engineer, Vehicle Engineer, Maintenance Engineer etc mainly on Rail Project large and small, in 42 years touched most aspects of rail work, mainly in Design, Construction etc

I dabble in N, TT, HO, OO, On30, O, G and live steam in 3 1/2 inch and 5 inch gauge. My new dabbling addition is the wonderful world of Arduino and Internet of Things (IOT), amazing what can be achieved and at a very low cost.

Once I get my head around this forum I will put up an update to the wonderful DCC++ system, the update allows DCC++ on a Arduino Mega 2560 to:

    1. Connect through WiFi to JMRI using the ESP8266 WiFi Board. No more Network cables
    2. Use any of Mega Serial Ports to connect to the outside world, works very well with (1)
    3. Use the 43A PWM power drivers instead of the usual Arduino Shield
That's about it for now, quick intro is best.

Hi Dave, welcome. Happy to have you on board. I'm not familiar with the two live steam gauges you mentioned. I'm only familiar with 3-3/4" and 7-1/2". Are 3-1/2" and 5" related to the Metric system?

Welcome aboard, DaveT. On October 1, 1974, I landed in Kuala Lumpur as a crewmember in a Lockheed L-1011 sales tour. We flew a couple of demonstration flights then left on the 2nd for Guam on our way back to the USA following a literal round the world adventure.

    Hi Fitz

Interesting trip for sure. Back then KL would have been a very sleepy town, nothing much of a place. Now its a vibrant city in South East Asia, good fun place to be.

    Hi Hytec

In UK, Australia etc the live steam comes in 4 gauges - 2-1/2", 3-1/2", 5", and 7-1/4", their history goes back a long time, especially the 2-1/2" which really started the live steam hobby off in the UK (and really the world) by Lillian "Curly" Lawrence, known as LBSC, very interesting gentleman. Designed and wrote the build descriptions for most of the early Live Steam locomotives .

For starting off info on LBSC have a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curly_Lawrence

The 3-3/4" and 7-1/2" gauges seem to be mainly USA and Canada based.
