Hello, First time caller when it comes to 3D printing..... I re-sized these NZR LPA wagons to N scale. Pretty rough finish currently but I will get them sorted. My question is whose wheels / axles etc do you recommend in N scale? Would I be best to have the couplers attach to the bogies (do they have bogies or just axles?). I am about to re-print the bases a couple of millimeters wider then I'll trim, under-coat and paint and see how they look. Any help gratefully accepted. Peter
There are plenty of high quality wheelset options to choose from. I've not done comparisons between brands since I'm not terribly picky but I've had good luck with IM metal wheels for my projects. I like metal wheels as they add a little bit of weight to my relatively light weight prints. So far I've been sticking to body mount couplers and looking at your wagon design I'd say that's probably the best route to go for that model, too. Cheers -Mike
I also suggest metal wheels. I've used Atlas and Intermountain, the Atlas are cheaper but the Intermountain look better. Their are several other brands and different people have the favorites, but I haven't seen any complaints about any brand in particular. Sometimes it just comes down to what is currently available. One thing to be aware of is they do come in different sizes, the most common being 0.537" (Micro-Trains compatible) and 0.55" (Atlas compatible). Either will work with a slight adjustment to the model, but it's important to know if you have to order ore than one set. The cars you show printed have the axles mounted directly on the car so they have no bogies (trucks in U.S. parlance), and no place to attach the couplers other than the body.
Robert's right. No bogies. "Body mount" refers to an underframe mount, and it looks like your underframe has coupler pockets already. You might need to adjust their size to accommodate standard couplers. N scale couplers aren't just sized up or down off of the couplers for other scales. You'll have to choose between U.S. style knucklers or something more appropriate to Europe.
