Oh, who asked you? :tb-biggrin: Seriously though, thanks for the tip. This is why I went to the experts for advice! Once I get a scheme I like, I'll know it's realistic. I've already begun to tinker with the GP-7 and SW-9, and yes, they're just like a layer cake! I thought it would look better, never mind be easier to paint. I have also nearly decided on a black roof because of grime. Given that, here are two updated versions per your input, for your perusal (as well as everyone else's). The photo is of a railroad that uses a similar pattern to the second scheme.
I vote for #4, though I would consider making the rough black or dark gray since it would, in the protoype, look that way as a result of diesel exhaust anyway.
I think the first of the 2 in this latest rendering will make it easier to cross dress the other body types .
Chaya; I would use this paint scheme, but I would also add a red pin stripe between the blue and cream, above the lettering. As for colors, try Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo cream and Great Northern big sky blue. Signal red should work for the stripes. John C.
Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo cream! Who woulda thunkit? :tb-biggrin: An additional stripe does sound nice, but I feel like it's already going to be hard enough to paint. I've only ever painted one engine before, and it wasn't complicated. :tb-wacky:
The other scheme has the black roof going forward and down in front of the windshield . To stay with the theme you would need to paint the GP or switcher roof black , and the upper forward and rearward windows black . With that first scheme you don't need to put any black on the GP or switcher cab at all unless you wanted . Above all , this is your scheme . These are your choices , and many more real railroads don't have exact matching schemes from body style to body style than have mismatches . Looks wise , for a cab only decision the second one looks better to me , but as stated , harder to cross dress than the first one , but again , it doesn't really have to be a clone .
Ohhh...I see. I did, in fact, design the GP-7 and SW-9 with black roofs just yesterday to see how it looked. I flipped the color-bands because of the stanchions and louvers, which I sort of enjoyed because I could imagine the NMC owners coming to this resolution themselves. See below. One thing I'm not sure of yet, though: what do you mean I have to paint the windows black?
I think he's talking about the front and back of the cab. I don't think a paint shop would bother with that much consistency, especially if they were swapping the color bands.
Exactly correct . But I think his last 3 choices individually and as a set are perfect . They represent a family with subtle changes among them for logical reasons . Well done Chaya .
Personally I'd keep the blue on top of the White for or GP and SW units. Never liked White on the top of a loco as it gets very dirty from exhaust. The two major roads that used white as a primary color didn't keep them for exactly this reason. KCS and SOO.
Excellent catch, I did for get about them, as well as GMO's Black and Whites, Frisco's White and "orange" and the Autotrain, the original not Amtrak version.
Paint Scheme Personnaly I prefer the third scheme with a dark blue or grey roof. White as other have said gets dirty very quickly. Great looking scheme and the name New Mexico Central is good too. Attached is a couple of Longview Kelso & Rainier Ry photos. I did the paint on these. Simple but not gaudy or unbelieveable.
