    Hi all,
I have two Kato Santa Fe E-8/9's and I'm trying to find some photos or anything close to what Santa Fe had on these units. So far I've got sun shades, rear view mirrors and lift hooks on.

What about the grabs on the nose. Did the E units have these. What about antennae. Anything suggestions would help a bunch. Thanks alot guys.
    Take care.

    Hi Mitch

Someone else will have to answer the prototpye questions for you, as I have no idea, but I can offer my help in the actual detail phase. I find it the most helpful to have all the information and pictures needed before you begin working because you might have to pull something up or change. Trust me, I've done that alot, and regret it. Good luck on your units and would love to see some pics.

Hmmmmm, I like this question, but don't know much about E8's (even though I have gotten a cab ride in one and done maintnence work on both prime movers...LOL :D).

First off, all locos have grab irons and the E8's DO have them on the engineers side of the nose to climb up. There are also the grab irons above the windsheild. You can also add wind sheild wipers and air hoses with out a picture as long as you judge well.

    Hope this helps.....

Welcome to Trainboard, Mitch. Here are links to some pictures of Santa Fe's E8m's at various times.

    No. 80
This isn't a very good picture, but it was the only one of an E8m I could find on the web that was taken before 1960. This picture was taken in Amarillo (I think) sometime before October 1959. Notice the lack of grab irons above the windshields (sorry Craig, I had to point that out :D). There is a picture in Santa Fe in the Lone Star State, Volume 1 1949-1969 taken in Oct '59 that shows a wagon wheel antenna on the roof, along with a horn arrangement like that shown on no. 84 below. By Feb '60, the antenna was changed to the same type as on 84.

    No. 84, fireman's side
    No. 84, engineer's side
I would guess that these two pictures were both taken sometime from '60-'62. Notice the F-unit style numberboards. The grabs above the windshield have been added. I have no idea when the grabs on the engineer's side were added. Also, look carefully at the trucks and compare with the trucks in the picture below. When the E1's were rebuilt as E8m's, they kept the original E1 trucks, which used different bearings (I think that the generators were the only other components of the E1's used in the E8m's). Later on, some units swapped trucks with other E units, so they ended up with the newer style trucks. E8m boosters 83A and 84A were rebuilt from "Amos and Andy," the original Super Chief boxcabs, and received new E unit trucks when they were rebuilt.

I am pretty sure this picture was taken after the others. Notice the different horn arrangement (single pitch blats both facing forward). The chrome headlight casing is puzzling. Usually this indicates that the Santa Fe added the headlight, but this is the only E8m I have seen it on.

A couple of good sources for information on early diesels of the Santa Fe are Santa Fe's Early Diesel Daze by John B. McCall and Santa Fe Diesel Volume One by Cinthia Priest. Hope this helps.

Dwight also posted a link to a great site on the ATSF forum. It's on the "PIG" thread. Have fun surfing, it's a cool site for ATSF!
