Been many years since I did anything with model trains. In fact it has been about 30 years. I picked up another hobby which some time I will tell you about. But lets just say I have the nose of an airplane in my basement..lol So coming back I though I would do some research and man have things changed. I have a lot of catching up to do before I start on the build of my HO shelf layout. Nice to have found this place and I look forward to learning.

Hi Robert. Where in Western NY? My wife is from Westfield, about as far west as one can go in that state.

Welcome aboard, Robert. Like Rick, I ask where in western NY are you located? I was born back there when dinosaurs still roamed. I am also interested in the airplane nose in your basement, as a 33 year aviation person.

Well thank you all for the warm welcome. Western NY... lol The armpit of the country. I live just about in between Rochester and Buffalo literally a 5 minute drive from the shore of lake Ontario. The nose of my airplane? [IMG]
Being away for so long I came back to some pretty big surprises. I just want a few pieces of track to test with while I mess with DCC. DCC is something as well. Wow has stuff gone up in price. I do live in the toolie sticks so there is nothing near me to buy hobby stuff from. So I went to Ebay and found if it has HO and train in the listing it must be gold. So my question is where does a guy go to get a few things without have to spend a ton and also not get ripped off?

Robert in that 30 years you have been away from the hobby about 90% of retail hobby shops have closed. Most things are on line now. Some times you can find a deal at train shows so check for any that are close enough for you to get to.

Robert, check out our TrainBoard advertisers. Among them they carry just about everything one needs, at very competitive prices. There are quite a few other e-tailers out there, as well. EBay, unfortunately, is no longer a place where one can find good deals on trains (with rare exceptions). (Also, please refer to our retailer discussion policies)

I'm guessing that you have a flight simulator in your basement. I can't identify the type, but it's obviously a twin jet, lots of modern displays and probably a Flight Management System judging from those big controls on the left and right sides of the center console. Thanks for the photo.
