Can anyone recommend a good type of N-scale EMD hand rail sanctions. Got two JnJ shells for Christmas but no hand rail kits. Need the style for a CF7 and a SD45B. Thanks for the help.

Gold Medal Models makes a nice handrail stanchion set for EMD, GE & Alco units. It's #160-32 and has 150 stanchions in 5 styles. I have only applied these to a Bachmann 8-40CW so far, but they look great! You do have to form your own handrails from brass wire. I used the next size up (.008) from what GMM recommends (.006). It looks better to me, stays straighter and is a bit stronger. The .006 is more appropriate for grab irons, etc. [IMG]

    Good luck!

Thanks for the info Russ. [IMG] Do you know a good source for these parts. Can they be ordered through Walthers? My local hobby shop doesn't stock any GMM detail parts and if you can't get it from Walthers, they won't get it. [IMG] Anyway, I'm looking forward to this project. [IMG] Thanks again.

I'm looking thru my stuff to see if I can find the website that I got these from (searching for GMM is not producing results). They don't have a snail mail address or anything on the packages either! I may have found these thru nscalesupply.com or something...I'll keep looking [IMG]

In the meantime...here's some photos of the 8-40CW I detailed using these stanchions. This is a factory painted, Bachmann N scale 8-40CW with some serious detailing! Enjoy! [IMG]

Update- Although I think I ordered direct from GMM somehow, I did find them listed at nscalesupply.com. They have a large line of GMM products (plus I love nscalesupply.com! [IMG])

p.s. I used ACC to connect railings to stanchions, not solder as GMM recommends (poor soldering skills [IMG])

Thanks Russ [IMG] I think that some of these would be good to keep in stock!

Regarding the original post, don't JnJ do handrail kits? I am sure I have seen them on their lists, although that does not guarantee that they had them. The lists produced by the new owner, though, do seem to be geniune items produced.

Thanks Kevin. [IMG] Yes, I did replace the grabs on the top of the nose with .006 wire and I added the two little ones in between those as well. The ladder grabs on the front I left as-is (molded), although I added tiny yellow decal stripes to them so they stand-out more. The cut-levers are also bent from .006 wire. I also have a second unit I've started all this on...hopefully will do a third too.

Alan, I don't know about the JnJ handrails...seems they have less and less. I really wish they would start producing GP60M shells again (never got one [IMG] and it's my all time favorite loco!)

I should also mention that if you do a 8-40CW, you need to keep the long plastic stanchion next to the AC unit. GMM does not provide these and you would need to add a stiffner to the back of the plastic one for support. I used a piece of the tree from some etched metal parts. I also put the pin of the side stanchions under the sills vs. in the hole as GMM describes. Otherwise the stanchions are a bit too long on this loco.

    Happy New Year!
