here's a little update, I have finished putting plaster on two of the three renslow sections of my layout. I hope to finish the third section this coming weekend and also start some painting and scenery! below are the results of my plastering this last weekend. Here soon I-90 and Boylston roads will be going in as well... [ January 22, 2006, 05:29 AM: Message edited by: popularthinks ]
As I am very familiar with the scene Greg is portraying, I can tell you there's instant recognition, when I see his model pictures. Excellent , excellent work! Boxcab E50
I have some other news concerning my layout. I have been invited to tag along with the guys at Pacific Northwest Railroad Prototype Modelers (PNRPM) for their May 20th show. My complete Renslow section will be on display at this show. They have added a small write-up I wrote about my work on their website under the modeling section. The goal is to get these 3 sections done in time for it. who knows if all goes well maybe i'll have more... Ken, you might want to check out the photos section as someone last year at their show had a great substation and boxcab model displayed. PNRPM website
Just checked the link. Immediately saw it was Noel Holley. His Milw catenary work is legendary. Boxcab E50
Gee, do you have to put in I90? Why not go with something more traditional, such as Highway 10? I90 is so ugly and takes up so much room.
Dan- Old Highway 10 was not under Renslow Bridge. It was north of there, over the next hill. All that I recall being under there, before I-90, was a dirt farm road. Boxcab E50
I took the back way out of Ellensburg one time try'in ta' follow the line to Kitittas, and ended up on that road all the way to Vantage on the Columbia! I thought I was lost fer good!
I think it was hwy 10 where my great aunt told me when she was young her family was driving hwy 10 and from a certain point on the hwy, way in the distance you could see a train crossing this trestle. Ken, is my great aunt getting very old and mixing things up or was this possible? She said she remember her dad pulling over and the family got out of the car to watch it cross over the bridge. she said it was very far away but you could tell it was a train. I've tried looking at maps to see if it was possible but it is hard for me to tell.
Greg- It's been a long time since I drove old Highway 10. This may have been possible. But would have required looking well off into the distance... The railroad actually diverges slightly away from the Highway heading east from town. I have an older Kittitas County road map some place around here. But where? Would an aerial view answer this question? Boxcab E50
I have tried looking at terra server to find hwy10 and its relation to renslow. it seems it might of been possible... but yes very far in the distance, I am modeling from 70 and on so I-90 kind of has to be there. sorry...
There was a source online of USGS maps that you could download, but the map of this particular area I don't have, and I cannot remember or find the link.
Try this for surfing USGS on line: Topozone Just enter Kittitas, WA for the search. And then follow the tracks, or the highway. Which the latter in those days, heading east, was along the north side of the Milw after leaving town. The highway splits away at East Kittitas. A long ways from Renslow. And I just am not certain the bridge was viewable. The road following the tracks was a dirt county farm road. I don't recall it being paved. Perhaps for a short distance? Boxcab E50
next here is a map i got from google world. you can see Vantage Hwy (which i think is hwy 10, correct me if i'm wrong) but you could see where it bends it has a straight view of the trestle which is marked on the map at the lower left hand corner. however, this image doesn't show great detail so i'm not sure what hills may be in the way. if anyone could see it from there, i guess they probably just saw something moving and maybe a light.
