We have a GP40x floating around Sparks Nevada #7231. The paint is in reasonable condition. The original light package has been partially removed. It makes a neat contrast to the D&RGW GP40 #3080 that has been hanging around here. I'm glad to see that at least one of the old girls is still running.
Hmmm....not sure about the Speed Lettering. I last saw SP GP40X 7231 (the last active SP GP40X on the roster) about a year ago, and it was still in its standard lettering. Pretty cool that it's active; SP had actually retired it shortly before the UP takeover, and UP re-activated it after they took control. I remember seeing it at the deadline at Taylor, figuring it would never run again, and wham, it showed up a few months later running on a local! Paul #3 ------------------ Have A Nice Day!
No speed lettering on the 7231. I did get some pictures of it. A fellow engineer runs it on the local and told me that it's one tired puppy. On a speed lettering note, the MK GP40 rebuilds have been around lately. One of the exx-EL, ex-CR SDP45's that got rebuilt came rolling through Sparks last week. Train watching is still interesting that's for sure.
