I was looking at Dutch Schultz's website the other day and it peaked my curiousity. It lists a substantial number of KCS GP40-3s. Most of them acquired 2nd or 3rd or 4th hand. I realize that few have the same history so there will be some differences, but are most of them just getting electrical upgrades to take them to a -3 from a -2???? I'm not sure where all to look to try and figure this out. thanks! beast
I have a general idea: -2's are typically upgraded from older units with new electricals, etc. I think -3's are upgrades that include a wheel slip system too. Harold
harold, that's kind of what i was thinking. i know doing some surfing i have seen some with different cabs (wide cab(name escapes me now) and regular). i guess i just need to do some more looking and see if there are any w/o DB and get my airbrush & decals out. thanks! beast
One of the short lines around here has two ex-CN GP40-2 widecabs that they have repainted... Very interesting looking units Harold
KCS has had GP40s of varying ancestry over the years, including their own GP40-2s as well as several from IC and ICG. The ex-CN "widenose" GP40s are something to see in gray. I haven't gone over Dutch's roster lately, but I must agree it sounds like electrical work on the older engines. PS- I recommend checking out the KCS group on Yahoo, as it has an extensive diesel roster including KCS, Gateway Western, and TFM.
