I ran this through my fax machine as a scanner but the prgrams on my old computer could not convert it into a usable image. My new computer has made it usable, but now it won't read input from my fax!

What's the story behind this little teakettle? Can't recall ever hearing the name of this company. I like how the bell is mounted up front.

Godchaux Sugar Company of Reserve, Louisiana operated a 35 mile, 3 foot gauge railroad to handle sugar cane until 1959. This photo, of its 0-6-4T No. 7, was taken at the refinery. The car in the background is on an IC spur where raw sugar was brought in from other areas. The roster consisted of 0-4-4T's, 0-6-4T's, and 2-6-0's, plus one Diesel, which carried an old tender to keep it away from the cane cars. The photo was taken in November 1958. I had visited with Frank Ellison the day before and he told me they were running, so I cut classes and was on a Greyhound bus the next morning.

They shut the railroad in anticipation of using Cuban sugar - but then Castro took over. They went back to growing cane, but the railroad was gone.................

So it was a three footer. Interesting!

Did it serve multiple plantations? Or was it one huge operation? That boxcar in the background has me wondering- The incoming sugar you mentioned- Was it in bags?

The answer a couple of your questions. 1. It was one large operation, but the longest single line was less than 10 miles. 2. The raw sugar was loaded in the older boxcars just like grain, in bulk.

The Godchaux plant was unusual in that it started with cane and went all the way through to white refined sugar in bags ready for supermarket shelves. The refined operations also brought in sugar from other "sugar mills".

Thanks for the info! Do you have any other photos of this operation you could share?

Alas, no. See my first post. Also, this was the only one I ever blew up into an 8x10.
