The S2 is located in Somers, sitting right beside the "Great Northern Memorial Trail", which is the line running alongside Hwy 93 to Kalispell.
The S1 is down in Polson at The "Miracle of America" museum, driving thru Polson on 93 you can see it from the highway.
RFE- The Great Northern Railway had a tie plant located on the north edge of a little town named Somers, in Montana. Somers is on the NW corner of Flathead Lake, and was reached by a short branch line extending south from the town of Kalispell. These two little fireless teakettles were used in that plant. I never noticed before that these had slide valves. In fact... do any fireless engines *not* have slide valves?
Dean- Received your PM, and thanks! I am waiting for my wife to come home this evening, and will quiz her at bit more as to where she was in that town. Boxcab E50
Well, I hope to enjoy a brief ride. I just wonder where we'll end up! If my wife missed seeing the display, I wonder where she thought she was? Ha ha. Hope she was actually in Somers! Boxcab E50
Went for a ride today. Stopped at the S-2. She's a bit rough. A bit of vandalism, etc. :tb-sad: Still, nice to see her. I forgot to look closer at the builders plate for it's number. Guess now I have an excuse to go back again! Boxcab E50
Dang, makes ya' wanna' run up there with 20 gallons of paint and clean things up!! I've alway's wanted a speeder just like that, dang it!!
Dean- You must be up in the Flathead? Looks like they moved the little Plymouth(?) that was sitting in front of S-1? Boxcab E50
Kurt That speeder was in real good condition. Ken I'm staying in Polson across the street from the Super 1. Yes the S1 was moved forward quite a ways, and the speeder is sitting where the S1 was. The Plymouth is now sitting beside and forward of the S1.
Dean- Wish I didn't have such a pain level today. I'd see if we could meet up for a few minutes. Boxcab E50
Ken- That would be neat, but I understand completely. I hope you get to feeling better soon. My dad has his good and bad days as well (asthma from the mine in Libby) We rented a boat yesterday and floated around Wild Horse Island, dad says the Mackinaw fishing is great in Flathead these days, back in the day you could only catch them (in numbers) in the winter. We would launch at Blue Bay and fish up to Skidoo Bay. Now they catch them all year long. Beautiful weather your having finally, I only have 2 days left, I hope I can get up to Frank Lake to get some pictures of the trestle before it's gone forever. (you may remember my thread last year asking about it's history) It was under construction by the Brooks Scanlon Lumber Co. when the mill burned down, so they abandoned it. It never seen a train cross it. I've also walked the old Northern Pacific ROW here in Polson, trying to get a picture in my head of the trackplan and the lumber company. (aka TimberJack) :tb-biggrin: Get well soon my friend. Dean
