Does anyone have a definitive date at hand, for when the South Dakota Central RY was reorganized as the Watertown & Sioux Falls RY? I can't seem to get any closer than late 1916, early 1917. Also, when did GN absorb the W&SF? 1928?

A Google search of Watertown And Sioux City Railway turned up a court case,942' ~255 FEDERAL REPORTERV Odin R Davis that showed a deed recieved on 7/6/16. At least thats what I think I read through the legalese.

I once saw a definitive listing of predecessor companies for the GN. I think it was online. I otherwise have no idea.

Bet the GNRHS has a reference sheet on it!

1916 is one of the hints I found. But nothing more definite.

I wish GNRHS had a sheet. I wonder if they have something on their web site? Haven't visited that in a while. Forgot all about them. Argh. Maybe it's time...

I've now looked through the GNRHS site. Didn't find any data source there. Also sent an e-mail to Ben Ringnalda. Got an automated response of away from the computer doing something. So,.....

    Ken,
Do you have a copy of Ike Eisenberg's BNSF track charts? He had just finished #10 before he passed away. Amazing amount of early railroad history in it. Might be mention of it. It has plenty of information on my pet railroad, which disappeared in 1890.

    Okay,
The GN leased the Watertown & Sioux Falls in 1922.

There is no listing for the South Dakota Central.

This is after looking through my copy of #10.

In my emailings with Ike, before his passing, he mentioned he knew of various loose ends, of which he was tracking down. Many of them were for long ago roads. He knew of some conflicting data, and was trying to weed it out.

Seems that no one has picked up his project to correct errors or put in updates. Too bad.

I remembered where I had seen the list of GN companies. R&LHS bulletin 143: Here is a description--

Autumn 1980. The Great Northern Railway Company: Predecessors and Fully-Controlled Subsidiaries. The Great Northern Railway Company: All-Time Locomotive Roster, 1861-1970. Both articles by Kenneth R, Middleton and Norman C. Keyes, Jr. This single-subject issue has 143 pages and 120 photographs devoted to GN locomotives.

I used to own a copy.

No. Have never seen his work. I remember seeing the notices that he'd passed away.

Which company was that? Must be something GN...

Seattle Lake Shore & Eastern/Spokane & Seattle. There is a GN connection with this one, in that the GN used their depot in Spokane before the GN built their own, plus the Lake Shore bridge over the Spokane River was used until the GN built their own.

    I'm still hoping....

I'd sent an e-mail to Ben Ringnalda. What I received back was an automated 'busy and can't respond right now' type message.

    :(

    Mac46-

    Welcome to TrainBoard!

Yes. I have already tried this site. That's Ben Ringnalda as noted in post #12 above. Still hoping to some day get a response from him.

    Thanks!

Alright Ken, got some hard dates for you:

South Dakota Central was incorportated 9/27/1902. Sold to Watertown & Sioux Falls on 6/30/1916.

Watertown & Sioux Falls sold to the GN on 12/31/1928.

Info from the recently reacquired R&LHS #143, purchased so I could look up this date.

    Dan-

    Cool! Thanks!

Does that book give any other details about SDC or W&SF? I have a couple of train orders. Dates are 1917, 1918. They are still using SDC forms, and train schedule numbers. So I am wondering if W&SF merely adapted SDC schedules, or was using up old paperwork? Or possibly W&SF operated SDC as a seperate entity for a while?

Also, am curious- My June, 1916 Official Guide shows a dotted line extending to Hankinson, ND. Any hints of what SDC or W&SF had in mind as goals for their empires?

The book says of the W&SF: Inc. 6/24/16 to acquire the property of the SDC. Sold to GN 12/31/28.
You can read into that to mean what you need to fit your paper. Right?

    Hi Dan-

That's the interesting part of these "acquisitions". It does not necessarily mean the company was absorbed. In this instance, I would say yes. It's surprising how many companies continued to exist as a subsidiary operation.
