As the subject was recently broached in the current GN steam thread, I am now wondering- What GN depots still stand? Trackside? Moved and other use, or preserved?

In Washington state, between the columbia River, and Spokane area, I cannot think of any that survived?

    Anyone?

Gee Ken, just drop me a personal note!!

Hillyard (closed restaurant, moved), Spokane clocktower, Ephrata (BNSF), Quincy(BNSF), Wenatchee lunchroom (was next to depot, BNSF).

The only one I have been in is Quincy. No one was there, but it seemed quite intact from the days of passenger service, unike Ephrata which is now about 1/3 shorter. At Quincy, there was a wall of newspaper clippings of RR related events over the years, including overhead photos of a spectacular derailment in the early 90s due to a grade crossing accident with a car.

Did the GN ever have a freight house in Wenatchee? I keep thinking that I noticed a building once. Across the tracks, and somewhat east of the passenger station?

How about other depots still standing? Coeur D'Alene? Sandpoint? What ever happened to the little box depot that was at Dean? Is Newport still used for m-o-w? By POVA?

I think the freight house is now currently being used as the "roundhouse," crew waiting area, clerk office, MOW offices. Was remodelled a few years ago to better fit this use.

    C'DA, Sandpoint, and Dean: nothing.

    POVA is still using Newport.

    Dan-

Thanks for the info! Am thinking that perhaps this summer, I might wander around the area. It's been a while. This info will save me a lot of side trips, only to find nothing.

Am surprised that someone didn't buy the Dean train order office, and convert it to another use. It would have been fairly easy to move.

    Ken,
If you do decide to come out to Washingtongrad, drop me a line. There are so few train enthusiasts out my way.

The Skykomish, WA depot is still standing. Right across the street still stands the Skykomish hotel where railworkers used to be boarded but it is currently closed down. The depot looked to be in good shape the last time I saw it about 6 months ago. If you get into Skykomish there is a beautifully restored GN caboose in one of the neighborhoods. Theres alot of railfanning activity to be had in this area plus the fact the landscape is just gorgeous. Joe

It's been approaching 20 years since I spent time along the line to Skykomish. Back then, the substation was still standing.

With the price of gas as it is now, I won't be traveling much this summer. My longest journey may be toward a friend's ranch. Less than a hundred miles round trip.

Ok I found a photo I took of that caboose in Skykomish but I couldn't find any of the depot photos so that just gives me another excuse to drive back up there one of these days.

Saw a lot of those. Seems like a million years ago. I wish somebody would invent a time machine! With digital cameras of today, if we could take them back in a few decades, there would be some great photography! [IMG]

The original station from Monitor, WA. is at the Cashmere Historical Museum. It's really small.

There is also the caboose sitting right next door to the station that they are going to move up-hill to the trail entrance to the Iron Goat Trail. Also, the depot from Winton still stands in a feild not far from trackside, and the Leavenworth station is now the Grange hall sitting in about the same place as it always has since built.
