It would be interesting to hear the Colorado Historical Society side of the problem. I wonder if they understand how difficult, and costly it will be to try and replace the current opertion? Or are they simply willing to let it all go away? Which makes no sense.....
From what I heard today, they want whom ever is going to operate it to once again sign up for a 30 year just as before and if not they plan to sell off all the equipment and close down operations. Don't know yet all the details as to why the 30 year mark is so important to them to keep the railroad operational.
While getting my RailImages folders loaded I came across several photos from 1992 related to this topic and here is just a few that are now loaded.
I read somewhere, that the Historical society, only owns the land and trackage, not the engines and cars..?
Welcome aboard! I have also heard the same information as you've mentioned. Seems to me as a confusing picture. I only hope it's positively resolved. Soon. Boxcab E50
This is correct... I plan to take some photographs this summer before the equipment is removed. From what I hear too, they plan to send the engines to other places within Colorado. Once I know for sure where they go I will try to rememeber to post that information. I believe one is already gone but only went into downtown Georgetown as a display but I will confirm that hopfully soon.
Actually from what I read. the operaters, which owned the cars and engines, have another railroad, so you might find a few there..?
This is also true. I believe they will all remain in Colorado but in various places. I have no idea what Georgetown itself will do without them though as they have been part of this area for about 30 years.
I've never been to the loop, but it was one placed that I had on my list. I have now crossed it off. I don't live that far from East Broad Top, so I play my visits there quite often, when they run. But, I really don't know how mucy longer they will be in business, they are really in a poor state and needs repairs big time. I have a few pics in the EBT post here.. Hopefully will be able to get some good video of them for my site this year.
Hey boxcab.. thanks for the welcome. I enjoy it here. You know.. I just don't understand though what's going on with them. I have a feeling it's all about the Historical Soc. I think they are the problem.
I fully agree. With the way the world and economy is today how can you ask someone to sign up for another 30 years. The current operator was willing to sign up for another 5 years but that offer was rejected. I don't know who would step up to a 30 year contract and it's not like you can just buy these old engines elsewhere. This is a huge loss to Georgetown and railfans in this area.
The other thing to stress to, is who paid for the inspections, fixing of the train equipment, blahh blahh blahh.. I bet the historical soc. didn't!
Yes. The local communities will indeed suffer. Very likely, this year would have seen a downturn in business anyhow. With gas prices soaring endlessly, tourism based economies will be in the dumper. I know many people who have already stated that they're not traveling at all until this situation changes. So many potential train riders will be at home this summer. I'm wondering just how they arrived at thirty years? There's not a crystal ball that exists to support that type of optimism. Ten years would have been plenty long. Boxcab E50
Yea, they say price of gas suppose to go up to $3.00 a gallon, nationwide. Although, that won't play a part in my vacationing. I plan on visiting at least 3 spots this year, once I get the vid cam. EBT will be the first. 30 years, is a bit extreem, and because of them, they loose a good railroad. I personally get upset when I things like this fold. One reason, I'm upset with the owners of the EBT. Lack of caring for their equipment. Grrrr. Hopefully someone will step in for the Georgetown Loop though. I think I'll watch that video tonight.
