Oh I was not tryin to imply that this guy does not know what he is doing. I was just commenting on my experience coming into the hobby. No insult intended. Randgust, you are 100% correct about the wheels and improvements that seem to take us a step back sometimes. And that its going to be tough to evaluate whats going on in there. Great layout plan! But that stage is one tough spot!

So have you gotten anywhere with your investigation?

Not so, Randgust. In his post at the bottom of the first page the OP states "I'm also having problems with some of the other atlas turnouts". That's why I'm inclined to blame the rolling stock, rather than the turnouts.

The best way to identify the problem is to run LOTS of trains and carefully watch what is happening. If you then find that some equipment is more prone to derail than others, then look for what is different about that equipment.

To provide an example, when I converted my cars to low-profile wheels (a mix of Atlas and MTL lo-pro "pizza-cutters") I had one turnout on which I couldn't reverse a train through without cars derailing. I initially blamed the turnout, and spent a lot of time tuning it, in an unsuccessful effort to overcome the problem. By doing some testing I found that ALL the cars that derailed had MTL low-profile wheelsets in them. I overcame the problem by swapping them out for Atlas wheelsets, and the latest "medium" profile wheelsets from MTL.

    Regards,
    Ron

No. No progress yet. Something happened to my JRMI program and I gave up. Then I had to come back to work. I'll try again in a week or two. I appreciate all your good sugestions. Thanks.

I'm back at it. My JMRI went south so I have to get that straightened out. One of my DS64 quit working. I have been trying to move them around to get a good one where I can work on the yard. With the weather bad maybe I'll get something done. I just hope I don't go to far backwards.
