I just got back from a Lowe's in the next town, and the guys there said that they could order it for me. But I would have to have his boss order it tomorrow. So will try back in the morning and see if this guy knows what he is talking about.

Well just to keep you folks updated, it is looking that at least here in Stockton, the blue and pink foam search is over, can not seem to locate any at all. So will probably experiment with the white stuff a bit, this next weekend. To busy at work to try this upcoming week.

Bummer, in that case, I would say yes try the white stuff. It will work just more of a mess when working on it.

One of the bigest differences with the white "bead board" is it doesn't contour as well as the closed cell foam. The beads pull apart leaving a clearly styrofoam edge. As long as you are using a product over it, plaster cloth, Sculpta Mold, Perma Scene, Hydrocal, whatever... you will never really know the difference, as long as you are not depending on it to suport weight. Ther may be a difference it how it transfers sond but that's not a huge performance issue at all.
Go for it! There is no absolute "right" way to build a railroad, and there's only one sure fire way to find out what doesn't work ;) .

If you use the white stuff be careful not to use it for anything structural. By that I mean it will not ake wieght very well the way the pink stuff can. If you use it then cover it well with plaster if you are going to have a train on it [say like ove a mountain etc]. Do not rely on it to support wieght. For basic contours it might be fine, but it is messy as heck to contour, cut etc. Make sure you vaccuum lots. Also as with all foams, if you use a heating implement to cut it, be aware that the funes are toxic.

Hope that helps. Have fun. :)

    Steve,

So... were you able to locate anyone to purchase the pink (Owens-Corning) or blue (Dow Chemical) foamboard?

Nope nobody locally is carrying it, and I even had the number for the pink foam, from a Home Depot in Oregon, when I was visiting up there. Had my local Home Depot people put in that part number and they said they could not even even pull it up. So will have my brother buy me some, and ship it down to me, from Oregon.

    STOP!!

I remembered an older post on this topic. http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=78896&highlight=pacific+insulation

You only have to drive as far as Oakland.

I don't really like going to Oakland, I try to stay away as much as possible from there, but if that is the only place to get the foam, I guess I will.

According to Owens-Corning's website, the following dealers sell their pink "Formular" foamboard.

    SAN JOAQUIN LUMBER
    235 W SCOTTS
    STOCKTON, CA 95201
    209-465-0552

    HOME DEPOT 6677
    8850 SAN YSIDRO AVE
    GILROY, CA 95020

You might give them a call. Good luck!!

    QUESTION:

I have attempted to post a business in Stockton that carries the Foamular "pink" foam board that Caldog is looking for.

    SAN JOAQUIN LUMBER
    235 W SCOTTS
    STOCKTON, CA 95201
    209-465-0552

    and
    Home Depot 6677
    8850 SAN YSIDRO AVE
    GILROY, CA 95020
    408-847-7712

However, it would not post without "approval".

Why do my "posts" need to be "approved" by the forum moderator?

I have posted less than 5 times to this forum, and to my knowledge, I have never posted anything in violation of the forum rules.

    .. I'm confused !!! ???

Do all "links" to other websites need to be "moderated" before posting?

    Thanks.

Model_Trains, I will call San Joaquin Lumber in the morning, but if memory serves me right I called them when I first started this search, and they said they didn't carry it. But I could be mistaken. Will let all know how my call comes tomorrow.

[FONT=""Trebuchet MS""]I'm sure Kalifornia would prefer everyone would build their layout out of more environmentally friendly and recycled materials. It's a great thought. Sometimes our hobbys aren't perfect and we have to add to the impact, just a little. I figure as long as I'm using as many of the little pieces of foam as I can and throwing away as little as possible my conscience is clean. I hate to think that someday down the road my layout will inevitably end up in a landfill. Hopefully when that happens I'm in a far better place.

Just got off the phone with San Joaquin Lumber, and they don't carry it, but the only they can get it is by special ordering it, but because I only need a small quantity, they said it would take a lot longer getting it here, because they would have to place it with another order.

So will decide if I want to place an order with them, or drive to Oakland.

Thanks for the heads up, about San Joaquin Lumber.

Well... you can't say we didn't try!!

How about the Home Depot in Gilroy? I'd call, first... to see if they have it, and if not, if they can order it for you.

What a pain in the "backside" trying to find such a simple product that should be available everywhere !!!

    Go figure. :(
