I finally found a scanner at a reasonable price that could handle my 70mm slides. (That's 120 roll film.) These two pictures are from a 160-slide set I shot at the New York Worlds Fair in 1994 and 1995, of the AMF monorail.

There are 160 pictures in the series. Of these, only three have a railroad theme, these two and one I haven't scanned yet, from the Long Island Railroad exhibit.

Since this is the photography forum, here are some of the technical notes:

    Camera - Rolleiflex T
Film - Kodak High Speed Ektachrome 120 roll film. (2-1/4 square transparencies.)
Lighting - Only available light, no flash.
    Exposure - Not recorded.
Scanner - Microtek 5900 (Flat bed, with built-in provision to handle slides and negatives up to 4 x 5.)

I bought the scanner and installed it yesterday. I scanned four pictures as part of the learning process. The other two can be seen at the link below. This is where the entire series will be posted. Just look for the NY World's Fair album.

Nice scans Peirce! I am curious ... is the slide scanner an attachment for the flatbed scanner, or what? How does it work? [IMG]

No, this one is not an attachment. It is built-in. It has a special mask you put on the flat bed which is just to make sure your slide or negative is under the light housed in the lid. That light is only used when you set the type of material to film. You do this through the software supplied with the scanner.

This is the first scanner I have seen with the quality and versatility I needed for under $200.00. You can scan at 69 dpi, if you are only going to display on the web, or as high as 600 dpi for critical print work.

Thanks for the info Peirce. I have some old 35mm slides I'd like to be able to scan. I don't have any large format negatives like you.
I noticed in the last CostCo advertisment that they have a 'PrimeFilm' 35mm film & slide scanner on sale. Does anyone have one of these? Does anyone know if this unit is good or not? [IMG] [IMG]

Bill, I have seen some decent results and good writeup posted on the Primefilm 1800u on Trainorders. BTW, TOMORROW, MAR. 16, COSTCO has a ONE TIME GOOD DEAL on that one for $99, internet only. I'm gonna try. I think you need a coupon and I don't have it.

All the photos I've scanned into my Railimages album (and therefore posted here and in my own website) were scanned using a Hewlett-Packard officejetv40 scanner/fax/printer/copier my wife bought at Office Depot. I've got a lot of slides, and I wished I could scan them bad boys- darn it.........

Your monorail shots (and the LIRR pic) are awesome, Pierce! [IMG]

I have a Visioneer 9020USB that will do slides and 35mm negatives. I think it was at Office Max or if not it was Office Depot. It was about $120 if my memory is correct. It has inserts as was described above and a light source in the cover.

Gil, can you post a scan of a slide from your machine? Bill, thanks for the clue on that. They must have changed the rules. I ordered one, too. I have 12 slide containers with about 20 rolls in each, hardly any trains but a lot of airplane stuff. Looking forward to scanning a previously untapped source. :D

    Wow, Peirce!

I was at the World's Fair at age 6-7 but don't remember much. Thanks for posting those! I still pass by the remaining stuctures now and then and wish it were possible to do it again................

I love the LIRR train! I most likely took a ride on it!

    Will do one later today.

Is the LI train at the Fair using 3rd rail or is that a dummy 3rd rail?

It has been so long ago (almost 40 years), I don't remember. It does look like it might be, however.

Being that I have lived in Queens my entire life, it never fails to amaze me just how clean and neat Flushing Meadows Park used to be. It certainly has changed but them structures are still standing. If NYC gets the olympics (which I personally hope that we do not) they have plans to alter the entire park.

Jim - When I moved in with my brother I packed the few slides I have But so far have not found where I packed them. I will keep looking but it may take a while.

Gil, no problem. I just wanted to see how your scanner did with slides. It's a moot point now as I have ordered the Primefilm 1800u. Once I receive it and figure out the software I'll post some stuff here. Thanks. :D
