SLOVENIA: The European Commission agreed on March 15 to provide €99m from the Cohesion Fund to support the €149·5m national roll-out of GSM-R. The project will require more than 250 base stations on the 1 230 route-km rail network, along with a central control system and management centre. Completion is planned by the end of 2015. 'This is a very positive step towards the modernisation of the Slovenian rail network', said Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn. 'The improvements to the communication system should increase safety, and reduce journey times as well as delays.'

Mr RSS beat me to this news item! We also need money for the electrification of the Pragersko-Ptuj-Hodoš route, as this international route to/from Hungary and beyond is still diesel worked. The track is being upgraded in preparation, but the electrification is way behind original estimate of competion.

Mind you, I am more than happy to be able to watch freights changing between electric and diesel locomotives at Pragersko, also to be able to see/hear US export design "Reagan" class 664's screaming along on freight trains!
