I just received my ESU Cabcontrol 50310. In the out of the box online video, it was mentioned that there is a built in "low voltage" detector, and if the voltage is not set high enough, no power will be sent to the track. Although I have a 3 foot test track I am using to test the product with only one engine on it at a time, I will eventually be using this with a large N scale layout that runs mostly lighted (LED) passenger train cars with most often a 2 engine consist, and about half of the engines running at one time are equipped with sound. I run at max 4 trains with an average of 8-10 cars at one time. Max totals of 8 engines, half with sound, and about about 32-38 lighted cars. Previously, in my former smaller layout, this load would sometimes overload my NCE Amp limit of 3 amp (I think that is correct). The set up video for the ESU 50310 says to set the voltage all the way to left to get the lowest voltage possible when using N scale, and increase it until track power is obtained. There are no setting marks to know how much voltage is being delivered to the track. The recommended is a 12V setting for N scale, but I cannot get power to the test track until I turn the voltage knob about 1/3rd of the way up. If the power output is 18V max and 12V the minimum, I'm guessing I am delivering somewhere around 13V or 14V, based on these assumptions. There is also a "Max Amp" setting in the cab control - I have left it at the default of 4 amps - this is digitally set. I rarely run the engines at full speed for more than a few seconds, a normal running speed is probably about 75% power or so. Question: I continually read on sites that 12V should be the max setting for N scale, but other sites indicate the Amp setting is the most important. If indeed I am set at 14V and 4 Amp, is there any reasonable danger of damaging my decoders, engine motors, or lights?
