All, Wondering if someone could give me the approximate time frame that the Erie Lackawana ceased to exist. I was checking out the trains in town this AM, on my way home from work. When I happened across an Erie Lackawana 50' gon, converted to turnout transport! Lettering, while faded and in rough shape, was still readable! Restenciled for SPSX now. Found another car, just like it, also labeled SPSX. Only any other marks, etc...were flat gone! Rusted, worn away etc.. Had to head home, get camera and return for photos.
Keith, The Erie Lackawanna railroad became a part of Conrail on April 1, 1976. Hard to imagine there are still cars out there after 35 years. But from time to time we see them here in Virginia on the CSX trackage. Great pics, thanks for sharing. Don
I wonder how that car came to Colorado? Interesting how such things happen! Conrail formed on April 1, 1976 by merger of: Central RR of New Jersey + Erie Lackawanna RY+ Lehigh & Hudson River RY + Lehigh Valley RR + Penn Central + Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines + Reading Company. On January 1, 1969, the New York, New Haven & Hartford RR joined Conrail. Then on January 24, 1980, the Raritan River RR joined. Conrail also operated the Ann Arbor RR for the State of Michigan April 1, 1976 to October 1, 1977. I well remember the date, as many people thought for some time it was a joke! Boxcab E50
You might want to forward these pics with a little more info regarding location to the erie group as follows, erielack@lists.railfan.net I am sure they would like to see it as I was.
