I fortunate that some track work on the single track mainline forced two southbounds to stop next to each other (in good sunlight no less!). Which nose do you guys prefer; EMD on the left or GE on the right? I personally like the EMD nose much better.
I like them both, Being I am more for the Older units SD40-2's, Just your taste of what you like best, there both great looking units. Larry Doub Nice shot buy the way....
Gimme an EMD any day of the week! The GE supercabs don't do much for me at all...although I do have a soft spot for earlier Dash-7/8 units and U-boats. GE's may sound cool, but for looks, I like the lines of EMD/GMDD products better. Nice pic...is the 6786 an ex-Conrail SD60M? (I haven't really been keeping up with post-merger renumberings )
I would much rather have an EMD product, but that being said I don't know why?? lol. Ithink the EMDs still look alittle bit better, and from engineers I have heard talk, the EMD FREIGHT locos are a better bang for the buck and run better. isn't it sad to see that the ns has butchered the emd 60m so bad. look at the paint compared to that cool blue quality scheme and then the worst thing of all they removed the class lights. however i would rather run that emd any day of the week. i hate running the dash 9's.
The only sin NS committed was taking out the marker lights. I have no problem with them painting over Gonerail's exclusive "rust blue."
EMD is the only way to go! They knew how to build engines from the start! I got to sample a SD60M and a Dash-8 (both UP) and the crew as well as my friend and I all loved the Sixty; more room, quieter and smoother....but the GE was a good second unit. All RRs should require EMDs on the point.make crews happy. Great Shot Love shots like that
Now Now folks! The GE units are really the way to go! This would be my choice but then I bit pregadis. See my mother, and several friends all work or worked at the GE plant in Erie. A few years back I had a visitor to who I was happy to show my model railroad to, The question popped up so " Sean " were are the trains we make. I cant see any GE's here, what's up with that? With that found I pointed out TWO count them ( 2 ) units one of an old CONRAIL "Cornrail / Gonrail " UB36 and a Norfolk Southern 6 axel U boat. The reply I then got was " just 2 out of all of these ? " Then the next day the finance comity came to me and pointed out that if I was going to get any more financing on the railroad that I'd have to do something a bought the imbalance of power of EMD's over GE's. At this time I explained to the finance comity that money had been kind of short lately and that it would take some influx of funds to off set the balance of EMD units. The finance comity then handed down its ruling. The matter was clear and would be spelled out in no un cretin terns. The imbalance was to be corrected at once, and to see that this was done an emergency funding grant was handed down. In a sense the finance comity who is made up by my loving wife, sent me off on a GE locomotive shopping trip! All hale the great finance comity on that move! Finally a government body that makes politics that I can agree with! So you see its got to be GE ! By the way I'm also a devoted CHEVY fan! But if anyone has a monster truck FORD or brand new Doge Ram they like to give to me to see if I can be converted. I'd be glad to give it a try! Norfolk Southern , a one (1) GE wounder!

Believe it or not I do work for CSX and wear an NS Shirt and Hat to work sometimes. The part of the railroad I work on, the Winston Salem Southbound Railway, is jointly owned 50/50 by NS and CSX. I actually like the big GE's Especially the sound when they throttle up after a stop! (But that is only from a train-watcher's viewpoint) But I still love to see (and hear) a whole lot of SD40-2's
Makes no never mind to me, they're all fun. Just depends on what you're doing, GE's load slow but get down and dig like there's no tomorrow. The EMD's are snappy on the throttle but a tad slippery. I'm happy to have anything that isn't a 4 axle, Dash 7 crew smasher.
I am only guessing, but is it that the EMD's are two-cycle they are livelier on the throttle than the four-cycle GE's? This makes me wonder if the four-cycle SD90's are as quick on the throttle as their two-cycle predecessors?
OOOO I think I'm getting RIPED on here! He he … O well I guess its just one of those things! I guess that is all in the fact that Some of my family had or do work for GE and at one time I lived near the GE plant in Erie PA. I also love the sound they make when they notch up. I guess its just one of those things. Each and every one of us has our own thing that seems to itch the trigger finger. So I guess that explains so of my ways, I'm an GE fan, CHEVY fan and my wife is an Asian from the Philippines. Dose this mean I'm all out of wacky? O well I just love those trains!
The EMD looks like it has more character, Reminds me of two pictures of Transformers toys...both look big and mean, the one on the right looks meaner...I would take either in a heartbeat if you gave me either one!
Both are nice in that basic black and white. Save for a couple of extra angles in the EMD nose, it's hard to tell them apart from that particular view. To each his own...
