Jim- Yes. Am interested. But have essentially exhausted my limited knowledge. So am sitting back, quietly reading. Post more info! Boxcab E50
Ken, I'm sorry. Got a little impatient there. I thought I put that original post up about two weeks ago, turns out it was two days ago. This aging process is not good. With all the traffic on the board lately (yay!) it's hard to keep up!
What Came Before. Here is a shot of the only New York Central Pacific that I own, again from the collection of Harold K. Vollrath. No. 9253.
What is the plumbing or appliance, that extends straight down below the engineer? Is that a blowdown pipe? Boxcab E50
Ken, this is just a guess, based on other locos, I think it's part of an injector, based on the inverted funnel at the bottom. It might be part of the booster, which I'm not even sure this engine had, but the NYC loved them.
Yes. It certainly could be that. For some reason, the pipe looked a little fancier than I recall seeing on other steam. Boxcab E50
I don't have nearly as many photos as Darren, but will press on. We have covered K class Pacifics with one photo, will return to J class Hudsons later, and here is an A1 class Berkshire on the Boston and Albany, No. 1454, from Mr. Vollrath's collection.
Woe Nelly!! We have to go back and take a look at one of the most famous engines off all. The 4-4-0 #999 that broke all the speed records of its time on the NYC Empire Express and was imortalized by about every toy maker worth their salt. Yesteryear Depot photo.
OK. Now my memory needs refreshing. That 999 is preserved and on display somewhere? But I can't think of what museum? Boxcab E50
AWboy, I should know the answer to that, but in my old age, I'm not sure. Want to say the Henry Ford museum, but can't verify it by web searches. Anyone?
Have I stumped our most active NYCS fan? Panic time! What shall we do? I keep having a mental picture of a photo I'd seen somewhere. It's on display. With some other RR items. Outdoors perhaps? But cannot recall where I ever saw this. Or perhaps it's just too late at night...... Boxcab E50
I think it is Chicago.I was telling about having it to Louisville,Ky. on # 79 not to long before it went to Chicago. LEW
Chicago. That sounds like a good place for it. I can't think of the name for the museum there. The one that had a Zephyr or similar unit? Can't think of a way to search for it right now. Anyone? Boxcab E50
YES! Thank you everyone. The 999 resides in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. Incredible number of sites come up on a Google search. Thank you, LEW. When LEW says he "had it on 79" he's talking about having it behind him as engineer on no. 79. LEW is a retired NYC engineer.
The last Berks that the NYC ordered were the A-2 class, built by Alco in the late '40's for the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie branch. They resembled Niagaras and were far different looking from the old B&A A-1's. Another from the collection of Harold K. Vollrath.
Alan, thanks for all of your comments on the NYC locomotives. Perhaps you need to model the NYC in the forties? I don't know if any of these types are available in N scale.
Jim, there are so many good looking steam loco models, unfortunately I only need a few on my model railroad, so have been selective, and am painting them all for my AWRR.
