With my limited space and unlimited ambition, I'm thinking about trying to combine my interests in O scale and On30. Is there any "pre-fab" dual gauge O scale track available?
None that I am aware of. I did see a thread a while back about hand-laying a third rail. Of course you would need O 2-rail witht he third rail for On30.
My post elsewhere, from yesterday, on this topic: http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?p=472665#post472665 Boxcab E50
I would see if Micro Engineering has code 100 flex and hand lay your third rail in C#100. One thing I've heard discussed is O scale 5' gauge track with the narrow 30" gauge makes it look like O gauge 3 rail track. I tried using my MTH Scale track and the center rail was too narrow so using an HO track gage would take it off center enough to work but probably still look like tin plate track. Although, random thought here, in code 100 it might look pretty good. Greg
ME makes a c83 On30 flex track. Is adding an outer rail feasible? Perhaps buy one stick, and try it? Boxcab E50
I'm looking at the Micro Engineering ad in the Feb. Model Railroader. They only list code 148 flex for O... but they list 100, 83, and 70 for On30. Ironically the have dual gauge HO-HOn3 in both code 70 and 55, but no dual gauge in O or N
I've seen some plans for standard gauge / narrow gauge / dual gauge combinations that suggested using On30 track as the basis for the dual gauge section(s) and replacing the ties and adding a 3rd rail on the outside for standard gauge. I guess it would depend on whether the plan is mostly narrow gauge or mostly standard gauge as to which track to start with.
Just for fun- What are you contemplating? Have you sketched up a track plan, or concept? If so, could you share? Boxcab E50
I know it's idiotically simple, but here's my first pass (to keep the dual gauge trackwork to a minimum and let me run my On30 & O scale 2-rail equipment). I guess you could call it a Dual Gauge Double Inglenook plan. Sorry about the old-school paper & pencil drawing, but it was faster.
No problem! I use the same method when doing various scribblings. Even though I have XTrkCad, I actually enjoy using the old pencil, much more than a computer. Boxcab E50
