Thought I would re-kindle an old topic. Do you have shots of penned in railroad equipment? Let's see them! I call these "Don't Feed the Cabeese!"
Penned in equipment is always frustrating. Especially displays. How can we view and enjoy through mesh? Boxcab E50
If all the vandals and artifact thieves were penned in we could let these rare creatures out of their pens. There is hope. I remember growing up and seeing an old steam engine just sit there and molder in the open air near Oaks Park in Portland. I believe that same engine was later restored to operating condition and is now the working steamer SP&S 700.
Darren, the station was built in 1905 and is selling for $1,100,000.00...just in case you have some spare change laying around wink:
I do understand the why of a fence. But trying to enjoy the view is hard. And often the fence will allow a camera to poke a lens through, but is so close a photo does not work. Wrought iron may look nice, but it's worse than chain link. Ugh. BTW- Too bad the other engine that was displayed in Oaks Park was allowed to get away. Very sad. Boxcab E50
What other engine? The 4449? It's still here. There was a third, which I believe is now the other steamer in the roundhouse at Espee's old Brooklyn yard. I believe it is still undergoing restoration. Maybe I am missing something.
In my humble opinion, here is one of the absolute worst penned displays I have ever seen. The Great Northern 2507, a handsome Mountain type, in a cage at Wishram, WA. Not only is it caged from the side, but the roof is much too low and just about touches the stack. :tb-sad:
I can play this game too. If you want and you get there at the right time of day, they will let you in with these beast! and as you can see one or two some how got out of the cages!!!
Instead of a fence, a nice wide moat full of hungry crocodiles. But then again, all the required warning signs to keep the idiots informed would probably block the view.
Nice shots one and all! I think that there is the age old problem that communities have of "wow, we have this thing, now what do we do with it?" The easiest answer is a static display in a park. The fences likely stop lawsuits from folks getting themselves hurt while climbing around on the equipment. I guess we can be happy that this stuff is at least being preserved, not scrapped...
I have a photo just like that one.... It is a shame that the "real" station is in that condition and up for sale while Amtrak uses the soulless box next door.
Fitz, Do you have a photo of that sad Mikado sitting there rusting away in Garibaldi? It's at least not fenced off. For that GN loco, the only good thing I can say about the display is that it's keeping the rain off. Other than that, it looks kind of like the thing accidentally plowed through a depot so they put it "in jail." Adam
