As I can see we loosed some photos. How can I delete the thread without the Pic’s? I think I have to learn a lot about the new website! But it’s great!! Thank’s to the owner!
No, I am not able to scratch built such small things! ;o) The Fuel Cranes are kits from American Limited Models. Part # 5150 Snyder Fuel Crane there are two Cranes in one pack.
Hi Jim Can you tell me, what s the function of the blue Box and Pipes? I think that’s the water supply?Or is this to clean the Toilets of the Diesels? I took some Photos in Kansas City, they have two different Boxes. One is orange and the other blue.I used Brass, so I am able to move the Piping for Photos. Brass it’s easier to handle and last longer!
I'll take a stab at it...until someone confirms or denies it...LOL I believe... The orange are for the hoses to fill the sand tanks...on both sides. The blue is most likely water for the fresh water holding tanks for the toilets. The 2 small white tanks on the outside of the island...hmmmm If you crop them out of the pic...enlarge them...sharpen them 2-3 times...tilt your head to the left at about 45 degrees...and squint. It looks like the sign on the wall says. "Toilet Wagon Only". I would guess they are used for emptying the waste toilet holding tanks...much like an RV. The green colored piping in the middle of the pic...looks like an 'Emergency Wash Station'...if someone get sprayed by diesel fuel or even sand in the eye. I can see a yellow pull handle and an overhead showerhead on it. All speculation of course...but sounds dang good to me
George, I think you're correct. I've asked around on several knowledgeable lists but have not yet had a definitive answer. I use them as a replacement for the sand towers. I was able to get fairly close to BNSF's Galesburg facility a week or so ago but they still have the old fashioned towers. Apparently there is a heater in the base that keeps things pliable, and the heat duct like enclosure holds the hose and nozzle.. To make it more difficult, different roads use different colors. I'll likely repaint with orange. I figure no matter what I did it would be either right or wrong depending on the road. And I did look extensively but no luck. One of these days someone will pop us and tell me where I am wrong... Eugen, those are great shots. I couldn't find any that good, wish I had. The plastic is movable also but painted shut. I thought about making them movable, and may yet...
Glendive still has a mobile sand gantry and no big orange boxes, so that would probably be correct about the big orange sanders. The blue is water and the little white trailers are "honey-wagons," as they are called here. DEmergency showers are a OSHA requirement for working around the fuel and oils. The yellow boxes are for fusees and torpedoes. Enjoying your build Eugen.
Interesting read when I Googled "railroad fusees and torpedoes". Had not heard of them before. Thanxs for the info Although...I did find info and a pic on REAL railroad torpedoes...LOL http://absurdonio.tumblr.com/post/5892282988/the-soviet-railroad-torpedo-ждт-3-zhdt-3-was
When I worked for BNSF I spent some time at the BNSF Denver roundhouse as a hostler. If I remember right (been almost 5 years) the Blue 'crane' is indeed water. Engine cooling water with antirust additives and green tracer dye pre added. Can't recall if there was a fresh water hose for toilets too or if that was just a garden hose. The Orange 'crane' housed lubricants. Engine oil, compressor oil, can't think of any others. Denver had standard sanding towers pneumatically filled from a covered hopper behind the roundhouse. hope this helps
Thnxs Steven... The more acurate details the better. Ever since I saw Jims 'redo' and Eugen's....I am more certain I will redo mine. The old plastic Walthers N Sanding Tower I am using is well beyond repair
Thanks for your Info’s. Now I am not sure if I have to paint them red or blue? but I know there are also some “honey-wagons” missing on my Layout!
Looking good Eugen! Here's a distant pic of the west side of the Glendive sand gantry and the sand car. On the far right you can see the oil/ water station, painted orange here. The sand gantry moves away from the tower to fill sandboxes, but needs refilled from the tower on the left. It's a cold job come February!
Hi Mark Thank’s for the nice Photo. Glendive seems to be e very nice Place!? I was looking around on Google map. I am more used to California but that’s so far away! ;o) So I start to build my one California in my basement. P.S. The Mountain in the back looks like our Matterhorn! Glad you liked it. I enjoy living here, small, remote and mostly quiet. Glendive is a small but very active hub for BNSF. There are quite a few industries here, gravel, agricultural and oilfield support that keep things hopping. The original 1880 roundhouse is still here as well as some of the newer sections of roundhouse, and still in use. That little peak in the background is at the entrance to Makoshika park, it's known locally as the Witches Hat.
