A friend is offering me an Atlas 8-40bw that has a decoder, but not sound. I really want sound. How difficult would it be to change the decoder to one with sound? Would the sound decoder come with the speaker?

A lot will depend on your mechanical and electrical skills. Soldering also. Is there a place for the speaker/
Your question leads me to believe you might be new to DCC or at least this type of loco.

Below is what SoundTraxx recommends. You have to order the decoder and speaker.
    GE Dash 8-40B TSU-1000 GE FDL-16 Modern 827117 810054

LokSound is very good also and some come with the speaker already attached with two wires. There are different LokSound types.
Check the LokSound website for the same type prime mover.
