Have noted a lot of consists of late with combinations of road name engines. Latest was a UP Coal bucket consist with two UP locomotives a Ferromex with a N&S in the tail. Then on the N&S mixes of the same with BNSF in the mix. What is the deal? These roads have engines parked all over why utilize someone else's?

By sharing locomotives, the railroads all benefit from cost savings because total locomotive utilization rates remain high. Railroads share locomotives based on horsepower-hours, thus NS units in UP service will be "paid for" with UP units in NS service. Both roads are able to minimize their locomotives in service and no money changes hands. To return stored units to service to move the same tonnage would boost maintenance costs and depending on the road, a greater number of the stored units are the older, less fuel efficient ones.

The dividend to us railfans is a much more interesting landscape of trains. (y)

I often wonder about Joe and Jane Public Citizen. When they see such consists passing by, do they wonder what the heck railroad runs through their town these days?

Think about the last person who walked by you wearing jeans. What brand jeans were they?

Yeah, me neither. But Jane Public Citizen knows.

Jeans many would not know. And being one pair only... But a string of huge, thundering monsters passing in view, of several different paint schemes, might just cause a watcher to wonder.
