I got the chance to do a little railfanning today off I-95 in North Carolina while on a business trip (digital camera ready!). I stopped in Wilson, that has a neat old station that appears to have been restored. I was met by a northbound empty coal train headed by CSX 8244 (SD40-2) as well as an ex-CR Quality GE unit re# 7389. In Rocky Mount, they had the track gang out, hard at work, which was holding up a Northbound Amtrak train (powered by an F40). A little further down the tracks in the yard was a host of power: CSX SD40's, a GP40-2/road slug pair, Switchers # 1171 & 1182, HATX 518 (GP40), HLCX (ex-BN) SD unit (# unclear), freshly painted CSX 8780 (ex-CR SD70M?), GT 6424 (GP40-2), plus some other big CSX GE AC units not in plain sight. Holding the main for the work train was a pair of CSX C30-7's:1 in "bright future/new image", the other in stealth with yellow nose! As luck would have it, I could not get a shot of the big AC's or the C30's, but did manage to get decent shots of many of the units listed above (all shots were taken from public areas, not on RR property).

It is the plain old Bright Future... some publications referred to it as their "New Image"

Wonder when the "bright future" starts?

While I am a CSX fan in the sense that I enjoy watching the action on CSX and find their employees to be nice folks, I really got to wonder if there is anybody "watching the store". CSX has their hands full just fixing all the stuff the Feds found wrong with their tracks, firing their top management (or cleaning out the Conrail bunch, depending on your viewpoint) and worrying that their stock price is headed south. The fact that the ex-Conrail part of the system seems to run better than the part that was already CSX sounds a little ominous.

I am anxiously awaiting "bright future"

Not to get off subject, but I've been told that NS is getting in deap poo poo! Somebody's going to snap them up if they can't pull out of their slump.

If NS would just listen to the people from Conrail they could make some great improvements.

IMHO neither CSX or NS has anything to brag about in the way they have disgested Conrail (or more properly, the Pennsylvania and the New York Central).

    re: putting Conrail in charge
Did not seem to work very well for CSX so doubt if NS wants to try it! It is tempting to speculate that putting Conral execs in charge would explain why the original CSX parts were doing worse than the Conrail parts!

Altho NS seemed to have gotten more indigestion from Conrail than CSX at the start, NS shows some signs of heading in the right direction by gradually (at a glacial pace) getting better. The worrisome thing about CSX is that they seem to have started out poorly and then gotten worse. Now the "new" management is the pre-Conrail management. Still sounds ominous.
