One year later...Pine Level yard looks complete now. Saw a north bound CSX coal drag today. All aluminum hoppers; very clean

    CSX Coal Train in Selma

Northbound crossing the diamonds. NS is east-west here. I would estimate this train is going 30-40 mph here.

    More engine.Lots of noise!

Lots of cars for NC. I would estimate 60-80 loaded cars.

Great pics from the Selma, NC spot!
Now I have another place to add on my list of places to visit in NC.

    Thanks for sharing,

Glad you like them, Elvis. Chessie has better ideas about where to railfan in NC. I would say Greensboro (NS) or Rocky Mount (CSX).

More in Selma. DOD (Department of Defense) tank train enters Selma from Raleigh. 11 Apr 2007. Nice Conrail repaint in front. Earlier one his morning, so two Conrails to exit tomorrow or Friday for Raleigh.

    CN in NC

    12 Apr 2007.

I thought it was unusual to see this car so far from home rails. Very good condition, too. [IMG]

When you railfan at the station in Salma, NC, this is the area where you stand to see the trains. It is only about 13 feet (3m) from the track. CSX coal train northbound:
Then a CSX manifest northbound. NS waits at the crossing.
After CSX northbound clears, NS heads westbound to Raleigh pulling the DOD tank train.
I stood as the engines passed and took this picture to give you an idea of the distance. It is pretty close and very impressive when CSX goes by at speed!

December 8 and a CSX coal train heads southbound through Selma past the old Gurley Milling Company. This facility is still a feed/seed plant with a lot of nice trackage. I'm not sure of these engine types. Big six axle.

Next, a rock train heads north by the same spot. I am still trying to upload a picture of these rock cars.

Leader looks like an SD40-2. Conrail-heritage 'Deuces had all the standard SD40-2 ghoodies, EXCEPT they had Flexicoil trucks.
Check the cab numbers--the 8's look upside down!
The middle engine seems to be a SD70-series. I dunno if CSX has any MACs, or if that's a 70M.

Hemi, the engine in the back looks like a Mac. It has the traction duct and the lightning bolt of a ac traction motor engine.

Closer photo of second engine. What type is the third engine? Newer trucks on it.

AC4400CW comes to mind. CSX and CP had checked the order form box for the special Hi-Adhesion trucks. I dunno who else, but UP has none, nor BNSF.
If what John says about the lightning bolt on the cab denoting AC traction applies to all CSX units, then it is indeed an AC4400CW. Did CSX buy AC6000's?

Flash, those are the steerable trucks. CSX does have AC6000CW. I can tell the difference by the bigger rear end. The radiator section overhang over the long hood. It also has a special scheme just for the AC6000. Its a yellow logo with black borders.

John, is there a difference? Hi-Ad or steerable trucks? Are they one in the same?

Look at the radiators on the 2 lead locos in this shot--the leader is a AC6000, the second is a more standard AC4400.

For some retarded reason, I cannot find many AC6000 shots in my albums. I know I shot more of them, but there weren't that many built.

Here's a poorly lit side shot of an AC6000 (yes, that's my truck):

Hemi, I maybe wrong but I always thought the Hi-ads were not steerable, and they look like the ones in UP 7074.

1 more telltale of the AC6000 is the air tanks are not recessed into the fuel tank, but sit above it, and as a result the walkway steps up sooner to accomodate this.:tb-wink:

Good eye, thoroughbreed! I never noticed that before...

Where's Robbman when you need him? I dunno if steerable trucks are the same as Hi-Ad. Prolly not.
