Here's a shot of an ex-CR SD40-2 I caught recently (sorry for the poorer than normal picture quality, I was shooting this across part of the CSX yard at quite a distance): http://www.trainweb.org/ncrail/images/CSXT8831.jpg You'll notice that this unit does NOT have the typical Dash-2 trucks... I can't remember offhand if all CR SD40-2's were like this or not... maybe someone can help me out. ALso, this single unit walked off with well over 100 cars by itself, without much of a strain! Harold, Looking through my shots (ones not online) of ex-CR SD40-2s find that they also have this style of truck. I don't think that EMD had a standard -2 truck. There are different types of 6 axle trucks, the Flexicoil and the HTCR trucks come to mind as two that can be found on the SD40-2s (and SD-40s as well). ------------------ Corey Lynch VP - Rensselaer Model RR Society NEB&W RR http://www.rpi.edu/~lynchc/Railfanning/railfanning.htm - My Site http://www.union.rpi.edu/railroad/ - NEB&W [This message has been edited by Harron (edited 04 September 2000).]
Corey, It seems I remember Conrail ordered all of their SD40-2's with the "older" style Flexicoil trucks, instead of the "new" HT-C trucks. I think it was due to the Amtrak troubles with a lot of derailments of their 6 axle locos (SDP40F's (?)) and it was suspected the trucks might have been a factor... Does this sound familiar, or I am completely off base? Chessie ------------------ Harold Hodnett Fan of NS, CSX, and their predecessors! The railroads felt the modified HT-C on the Amtrak SDP40F's was to blame for its derailments, so much so that a couple railroads banned them from their rails; when Conrail started getting SD40-2's, they still had their doubts, so ordered them with Flexicoil trucks...at least thats "how I done heard it"..... ------------------ Have A Nice Day!
This page has some info on the CR SD40-2s. Mankind is on the money on this one. http://crcyc.railfan.net/locos/emd/sd402/sd402proto.html These are 'unique' trucks check out this page at same place- http://crcyc.railfan.net/locos/emd/sd402/sd402det.html
Ahhh more tech talk SD40 were only built with Flexcoils SD40-2 Standard versions had HT-C CR however did not like the HT-C so they used the Flexcoil (many came from retired SD35/45) All of CR SD40-2 came with flexcoils and almost all the SD50s. No SD40-2 or SD40 were ever built or rebuilt with HTCR or HTCR-II trucks Conrail did however have some secondhand SD40-2 that had HT-C trucks but this was in the early 90s. ------------------ Theres no such thing as having to many coal hoppers or GP40-2 when you model Chessie System LONG LIVE THE KITTEN!!!
