    yes Tom good point.

Progress so far, all the below floor work done. Working on the log carriage support. Have to go into my woodwork shop and cut some black walnut just to collect the saw dust. Then I will rub it into the cracks of the floor boards and spritz with a little white glue and water.

OK the next process has you cutting 44 5x5s and I can see ahead a lot more precision cuts.So ordered a NWSL Cutter. Meanwhile I looked at the cardboard square for the boiler base. Hmmmm just picked up some hobby 1/16" thick mixed bag of squares. So online search for a brick pattern. First one I choose when burnt on the laser engraver turned out to be the perfect size and scale bricks... No really what are the chances?

Rust powder for the brick color and texture.

OK town council saw the sawmill won't fit and may have to be located North of town.

Your situation is extreme. But I have often found that my hand designs and planning really do not account for structures very well. I now tend to think in terms of structures first so I can fit them and adjust track to them instead.

What if you put a log dump on there and add a mill pond?

That's not a bad idea. Then the train can transport them to the sawmill the other side of town.

Thanks Geeky. Per a couple of sage suggestions, the sawmill will be relocated to the North end of town and the logging operation will get a mill pond. Gotta love pond dried lumber.

Funny how layouts simply evolve sometimes. ;)

    It looks great.

Starting the mechanical in the sawmill. Found a brass detail sheet for N scale ship in my collection. On the sheet was a nice wheel that made to perfect drain shutoff. This posed the question, we have steam in and out lines, the drain, but how is the tanks filled?

your engine is basically what you'd see on a donkey engine. Vertical boiler with lines to pistons, etc.

If you see this picture there is a water tank on the end.

All your posts on logging things have made me think a bit and I go and search up this logging stuff. Now I think I need some log cars for my own layout, along with a small mill.

    :)

Went to the Monroe train show today, picked up some goodies. One small item was a couple of metal wheels HO scale that I want to adapt to a band saw. For the saw blade I'm using the brass sprue from a N scale girder kit. The sprue has a perfect saw edge for an O scale band saw.

Once the boiler is hot, they used an injector (steam powered siphon) system to pull water from a storage source, such as a tank.

At the Monroe show I picked up a few more logs from Bob. Real wood, and cut so well, will look great in the sawmill. Someone asked where I got them from, he is local here, just down the road really, in Bothel Washington.

All looks great so far. Next question-Is there room to relocate the turntable to the space where the sawmill was going to go? Would be nice if it will work although it often seems something has to go to make it all fit.

    Tom,

You are correct, now the turn table has to go, the place where the mill was supposed to be located is rapidly becoming a mill pond ;) Here's a mock-up.

Now where can I get those mill pond workers with the poles?

Your mill needs to sit near the Mill Pond so that logs can be pulled out and cut up. So if you move the Mill, the pond goes with it.

In this photo you can see the ramp that is used to pull the logs in from the pond. Your mill kit has this as well. It also shows all the cut lumber in stacks out back.

Click this link to see the image full size. It's pretty big, which makes for better viewing.

    What about this layout?

A logging train is essentially a unit train. Demand for more cars on different branches of a line may require changes in numbers of cars, yet for the most part it's all about: take empties up yonder and load e'm, take loads to saw mill and unload 'em.
