Here's a cheapier Athearn box car that I painted up for a freelanced railroad. I did a number of these and some for my Logan Valley at the same time about 20 years ago. They all started of as undecorated black cars.
I hope European cars are acceptable in the car of the day thread. Any cars lettered for Slovenian Railways are scarce, so I was pleased to acquire these two Petrol tank cars. Whole trainloads of these run from the Port of Koper to the rest of Slovenia and beyond. PETROL is the major gas station brand here (I also use their domestic heating oil).
Petrol as a brand name. That's interesting, 'cause down here in Australasia (Aussie & New Zealand), that's what we call "gas" as a generic term. Brand names rarely get referred to in common usage. (just to confuse the issue, "gas" is also used genericly)
Here in Slovenia, what we Brits call petrol, the Americans call gas, the Austrians/Germans call benzin, the Slovenes call bencin. So not sure where the Petrol brand name comes from. BTW, diesel her is called dizel - sounds the same!
Burlington Northern number 243859 Series 243400-244249 This series was originally built in 1961-62 by the Northern Pacific. This is a 50'6" inside length 10'7" inside height non-cushioned boxcar, door opening is 15' x 9'11", GRL 177.000, Capacity 5079 cubic foot, welded fourteen side posts. This was kit bashed some time ago using 3 different MDC boxcars, the sides were scratchbuilt from styrene.
C & O BC C & O Boxcar maybe 20+ years or more old. It has a wooden floor, thin stamped metal doors and die cast zinc alloy body and trim. I like this one.
To keep this thread going here is another of my favorite cars! This is the first resin kit I ever built, it is a Rail Yard Models 60' Thrall Boxcar that was financed by Kellogs for use in hauling cereal. Most small cars would cube out before they would exceed the weight limits. So they built these 60' cars for that purpose. Car was painted with Scalecoat PC Green and lettered with the decals that came with the kit. Rick J
Another car which is available in SZ scheme is this van. Two axle cars are still quite widespread here.
Here is my scratchbuilt Burlington Northern Gondola number 588890. BN series 588887-588909 These were built between 1967-68 by the CB&Q at the Havelock shops. 65' inside length, 4'6" inside height, these were assigned to the transportation of aluminum ingots, capacity is 2,560 cubic feet. Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191
I picked up this boxcar at a train show in Houston, Texas in Feb. of this year. I was the first big show I went to in years. There are no markings on the car to say who made it. Maybe some of you may know.
Based on the Claws on the door, it is just an Athearn 40' Blue Box, but may have been painted by Bev-Bel, Con-Cor or one of the other custom car painters. Rick J
To keep this thread rolling, here is one of my favorite cars. A ExactRail PS4427 Covered Hopper painted for the Andersons, a local grain company (at that time) located in Maumee, OH. Painted with my special Floquil Paint Mix and lettered with Herald King Decals. Rick J
ItE=wozzek;9179I love all these cars! Bromine tank car? Where can I get one, he he?[/QUOTE] I made it with my wittle hands because it's a wittle car! Serious, it's so small you'd have to see it to believe. MR had a great article on building one.
