I'm looking for a bit of information- Does anyone have photo resources, which show pictures of wooden camp cars? I am looking for those which might have survived into the WWII era. These are a single level with sloped roof and clerestory. I would like to know if they were hauled on a flat car, had their own underframes, or both? Boxcab E50
Still hoping for an answer... I have since found the Anaconda Copper Mining Company logging operations used a virtually identical design camp car body. And theirs did have it's own trucks. One photo found shows truss rods, so I could easily bet on a wooden center sill. Truck for the ACM example unclear in the photo. Boxcab E50
The prototypes I am familiar with were mostly moved by rail but didn't necessarily have their own trucks. It seems to me that I saw a few that were designed to go on log disconnects from camp to camp. I will see if I can dig anything up. Adam
Here's one example of camp cars that were actually modified rail cars: Logging Camp Life Here's a shot of camp cars on flatcars in Washington: CONTENTdm Collection : Item Viewer Here's one from the Clark Kinsey collection where the crew cabins are on cribbing and were probably skidded or lifted onto flat cars... or were they lifted off the rails and then the rails moved? CONTENTdm Collection : Item Viewer
These appear to be on their own trucks and their own siding: CONTENTdm Collection : Item Viewer I have also seen some on skids. Presumably, these were move by dragging them, sort of like how steam donkeys moved.
Adam- I am hoping to prove how these were transported on the Great Northern RY. It's fascinating that for this specific style, no GN fan seems to have an answer! Boxcab E50
I didn't look to see which forum this was in. Sorry about that! :tb-biggrin: My question is how often were these transported outside of a non-interchange situation. I am guessing hardly ever to almost never. If I find anything GN I will post it here.
May or may not be what you are looking for, but I found this a while back. Scroll down to the second pic. http://www.carrtracks.com/mtgn1171bn6329.htm
There are at least two of these within a twenty mile radius of my home. The two are verified by area oldtimers both ex-GN RR employee and non-RR citizens familiar with seeing them in use, as having been specifically in Great Northern service. Problem is that nobody amongst them remembers whether moved on their own wheels, or a flat car. But they do remember them dismounted. I've seen many photos of similar designs in logging use. But none as yet in use by a common carrier operation. Those latter seem to have been mostly into using old box cars. Boxcab E50
I wonder if Geared Steam knows. He has some knowledge of GN and logging operations I have seen nowhere else.
