This caboose would be a good subject for a scratch builder. Notice it is a wooden caboose with sheets of plywood for the sides. It has two different style of trucks. It isn't the standard length for an EV caboose. What do you think? Anyone know the history on it? I sure don't. Greg Elems
I don't know the history on this unit. It appears there are roller bearings on at least the front axle. Can't tell for sure on the rear axle of the front truck, but the rear truck has friction bearings for sure. I get the feeling this is a converted work train crew car
It probably was a wooded caboose that rotted out so they just covered it with plywood. The different trucks are whatever they had laying around! Looks to me like someone needed a caboose in a hurry and the cheapest way possible.
Here is an interesting old caboose that we use on the YWRR's "Blue Goose:" The YWRR obtained this unit from the McCloud River RR in 1954. We believe it is originally from the Great Northern RR, circa 1911. Reportedly, it was in a wreck and converted to the stature it has today.
Bill, did we ever find out which caboose that belonged to the McCloud burned recently? Was it the fancy restored one?
Jim .. as I recall, it was the newer caboose. Damage was not so bad that they could not repair the damage, which they have done. The unit is back in service.
