From the Vancouver Sun Wed April 4 D10:

"Bombardier Inc. will become the world's maker of rail equipment on May 1 in the wake of Tuesday's decision by the European Commission to approve the Montreal firm's 1.1 billion bid to acquire money-losing Adtranz, the rail assets of Germany's Daimler-Chrysler AG.

The deal will nearly triple Bombardier's rail-transportation division, with a combined $8 billion in annual revenues, 37,000 employees, and between 20 and 25 per cent of the world's rail-equipment and services market.

Bombardier's rail group emplys 16,000 people, has 3 billion in sales and operates 21 plants in 10 countries, while Adtranz, formed in 1996, has 5 billion in sales, 40 manufacturing plants in 19 countires and employs more than 20,000 people....

The purchase also propels Bombardier into new areas, including train propulsion systems and locomotives. It vaults the Montreal transportation firm ahead of Germany's Siemens AG and France's Alstom SA, both of which are sometimes partners of Bombardier on contracts and foes on other contracts....Adtranz is also involved in the rail-servies industry, a lucrative market...."

Actually some CN units were made by Bombardier , they are actually better locomotives than that GE crap [IMG]

I think the CN Bombardier units are SD50's & SD60's and they are the CN 5400 thru the CN 5563 .

Amazing to think that this factory started off making snowmobiles or skidoos as we used to call them. Now they make aircraft and railroad stuff. Makes us very proud to be Canadians.

Actually I hate to prove a railroader wrong but the SD50F and SD60F are made by EMD. Bombarder made the HR616. which looks ALMOST exactly like a mix between a SD60F and a C40-8M.

ALCo may have died.... but in a way they won.

    Dave,
You should buy a copy of the Canadian Trackside Guide 2000 (but it comes out every year and the new one will 2001 - it is due out now). They are only $25 and especially you will get a lot of use out of it.

Available in good model railroad shops in Canada.

Well, this is a good news bad news scenario. I do have photos, especially from Fraser Canyon at the Cisco bridges. But I have been procrastinating at doing it because I know I will have to learn how to use a scanner, and them transfer them to here, which is something I'm not looking forward to. I don't own a digital camera.

Just checked both of my Coprehensive Diesel Spoters guides and both say the SD50F and 60F are EMD models. They are mechanically identical to American SD50/SD60 just they are in a hooded shrowd. (Kinda like C40-8M are basically C40-8W with Drefco trucks and a cowl)

    This is a C40-8M (site mislabels as a SD50F)
One sec and Ill find SD50F and SD60F. and if I am really lucky a HR616

This is a SD50 made by EMD (note the EMD like
radators in the back and the EMD air intakes in the front as well as the HT-C truck)The SD50F sports the same equipment as its american and australian standard cowl cousins the SD50 and SD50S. (16V645F prime mover enhanced electronics derived from the -2 upgrades) the SD50/SD50F/SD50S is a 3500-3600 HP unit

Dave. I wouldn't be suprised if your info that CN gave you was wrong. A few years ago a friend I have that works for CSX kept haveing 8569 (a regular everyday SD50, former Chessie by the way [IMG] ) in his consist. The CSX paperwork he has for it says it was a GE C36-7!!! Well at least they got the horsepower almost correct [IMG] (CSX SD50= 3200-3500HP depending on work, CSX C36-7 3570-3750HP depending on work)

The CN cowl units are cool, especially in the stripes scheme. Almost makes me want to relocate my model railroad to Canada :D

First to Chessie...for some reason, I thought you belonged to TAMR so in some other post I referred to that..my apologises.

And now, according to the Canadian bible...Canadian Trackside Guide (2000).. The HR616 (built 1982 CN numbered 2100-2119, 20 were built, last one retired in 1998) was Bombardier.

Also HR412(W) built 1981, last one retired 1998, with CN numbers 3580-3589, 2580-2589, ten units built, were also Bombardier.

You are correct RSN48. In fact my beloved Ohio Central owns a former CN HR412 as well as a M420W. but will be disposing of them soon due to parts cost. No problem on the TAMR issue. I just turned 18 today. I always though it was to late for me to be TAMR.
