What happened to BNSFs SDP45s? I have the 1998-1999 roster, but dont know what happened to the ones not listed.
If you are talking about the Santa Fe FP45s then go to: http://ok.railfan.net/fp45.html This is From QStation. If not right model look around in there as it has best info on all ATSF, BN & BNSF Locomotives as well as tons of othr info.
Be sure & check 2 other FP45 headings under ATSF Resources as ther is more info on these. The list of disposed units in that fisrt URL given above is out dated. #95 is at Barstow station not San Berdoo & 97 is now out of service. Also do a search on trainorders.com as there have been several threads on these.
If it's the former GN SDP45's you're talking about, I think they are all gone and have been for years. I did see a SDP45 last summer on a UP Train just north of Springfield, IL. It was wearing SP Grey and Scarlet with Speed Lettering! Man it was cool to see one of these relics! [ 15 February 2001: Message edited by: Maxwell Plant ]

OK, mabye I should have been just a bit more explainitive. I seem to have made a few typos. I need information on the Ex. ATSF SDFP45 #90-98. When were they retired, and where did they go. I know what happened to #95 and #98, and I need information on the rest, thanks again for your help.

Just an update...I was just at Barstow the day before yesterday and ATSF 95 is still sitting there coupled to an ATSF/MOW wheelcar. It was real comfort to see it as, I have plans to rebuild my own FP45s for my next wave of Santa Fe models (hence my namesake.."QTRAIN"..LOL) In my opinion, I think that EVERY HARDCORE Santa Fe modeler (and even BNSF modelers) should model at least one of these beautiful "flagships" from America's Railroad. If any of you get the chance to visit one of the places they have one of the remainders stored, take the opportunity to see it in person, as photographs DON'T DO IT JUSTICE. And, although the BNSF is slowing starting to grow on me, the FPs are an awesome example of WHY I became a Santa Fe fan and WHY I REMAIN A SANTA FE MODELER first and foremost. They ARE CLASSIC "Q" at it's ULTIMATE finest!!! Thanx 4 Listenin'...Let the QTRAINS roll...Q
When we were over in California in '98, we got a glimpse of 98 at barstow, but nowhere near enough for a photo. It was parked amidst a bunch of other stuff. Next time over, I will be sure to have a look for one (or more!) I agree, they are beautiful machines.
I saw an ex SF cowl unit a month or two ago... so i think they are still prowling. The F/P/SDF45s were some of my fav units.
They certainly are distinctive, and look good in blue and yellow, or red and silver. It is a pity that the FP45's were not repowered with modern prime movers, and kept for special use. Oh well . . . .(sigh)
Sorry Alan your engine is a SDF40-2, one of 18 engines aquired from Amtrak in exchange for CF-7s back in 80s. Original ATSF #s were 5250-5267. They were Amtraks first road engines but sidelined because of derailments on BN. Easiest spotting feature is vertical notch in nose corner. This was to allow steps on front to allow easier access thru nose. Notch is not real evident in your pic. This was a 3000 HP version of the Santa fe F/FP45s for Amtrak by EMD.
C.A.Jon, Look at the back end of both units, the ex-Amtrak SDF40-2 has a lot more "hood" behind the radiators, a real spotting feature of both units.
That is the best way to spot 'em, Brent, if you cannot see the notch in the nose Back to the SDFP45, I really think I will have to have one of these in N scale, even though I model the current scene. They are very special looking locomotives. I could always use it on officers' specials Brent, now you have backdated your layout, will you be able to run them?
Sure can, if we can get SOMEONE to build them! The F45's ride on the SD45 frame, the FP's (SDF45) ride on SD40-2 frames and the SDF40-2's ride on longer frames, MUCH longer! Something like the 50/60 or 70/70MAC/75 frames I think.
According to "Burlington Norther and Santa Fe Railway 1998-1999 Motive Power Review" by Robert C. Del Grosso, BNSF#6552 was delivered to ATSF 1900-class which was initially renumber to 5900-class. The engines were remanuifactured and redesignated model SDF45 and renumbered to the 5950-class when remanufactured in 1982-83 at the San Bernardino Shops. It was renumbered to 6552 upon merger. It is still active according to the 2000-2001 Motive Power Review.
If this was delivered as a 1900 series, that would make Alan's SDF45 locomotive a F45 orignally, not a FP45 right? The FP45's were in the 100 series if I remember correctly.
