Ive been looking at my pictures, and this is what I concluded: 739, 740, 745: green under nose stripe; no GPS dome; small BNSF cigar band 4300 series: green under nose stripe; GPS dome; large BNSF cigar band 4400 series: some green some orange under nose stripe; GPS dome; large BNSF cigar band 4500 series: some orange some green under nose stripe; GPS dome; large BNSF cigar band 4600 series: orange under nose stripe, GPS dome; large BNSF cigar band 4700 series: green under nose stripe; some without GPS dome, some with; small BNSF cigar band 4800 series: green under nose stripe; GPS dome; small BNSF cigar band 4900 series: green under nose stripe; GPS dome; small and large BNSF cigar band 5300 series: orange under nose stripe; GPS dome; large cigar band 5400 series: orange under nose stripe; GPS dome; large BNSF cigar band These details should add some fun to the otherwise boring HII consists. This information is taken from only the pictures I have taken. The small BNSF cigar band seems to be characteristic of the 4700-4900 series units, and the orange/green under the nose stripes appear to be random. The 4700s were the first HIIs to arrive, 4800s second. Somewhere in the 4900s, they changed the cigar band from small to large. The newer units all came equipped with GPS domes, but some older units didnt. BNSF 739, 740, and 745 were the first units painted in Heritage II, and were used as a test for the color scheme. Like all 700 series dash 9s, these units didnt have GPS domes, and because they the older ones, they have the small BNSF lettering on the cigar band. If you have any evidence to counter all this, let me know. Thanks. CYA DOWN THE LINE! Microscale Decals provides the info on green/orange below cigar band & small & large BNSF on latest decal sheet for these locos.
True enough. Never thought to look for differences. Like BN's SD40-2's; they had more than 800 of them, but not all were exactly alike.
