It seems to me that BN excuse me, BNSF and CN are just gonna play footsie with eachother and play with each others trains as a way to show everybody. No merger, oh darn, service like there was a merger, oh yea!

This agreement in my opinion is the way it should be. Agreements between railroads are fine because they can be "TERMINATED" at any time, but when it comes to crossing the boarder and Merging we all know the the US will sell out and the Canadians will end up owning the pride of US rails. When American roads begin buying Canadian roads then and only then can or should we talk Merge. I believe in an equal playing field. BNSF-CP just wasn`t. Just imagine Barber Poles and Maple leafs everywhere.

Me too. If these two were to merge, there would be one big railroad across north america. I like the agreement system better!

I don't think you'll have to worry about that happening.

In don't see why everyone is so happy. They been doing this along time ago. In fact CN has been running though Galesburg on Vehicle trains to Kansas City a heck of along time now. To me they are just expanding there horizons. If they work out and work together as one they will know everyones territory know. And they will not stop inevitable merger. It will happen. They are waiting to find a loop hole in the system. In the mean time move your troops to a place as a stragetic positons and then ponce on the ememy when there weak. Oh buy the way it won't be maple leafs will see in the U.S. there headquarters will be in Fort Worth,TX. Good old home grown american soil. They will see the American stuff a lot more in canada.

That's exactly right Jack. I can walk from my house into Canada in less than 5 minutes - the town I live in is half in the US and half in Canada. I don't think anyone will have to worry about a Canadian influence taking over in the US. Their dollar is worth about .60 American. I'm sure that Canada is far more American influenced than we could ever be on this side from over there. It would not bother me a bit to have something thought of as "American" owned by Canadians. I'm an American but I live in an environment that is primarly Canadian dominated. Maple leaves don't bother me.

So does that mean we should go bomb the Baldwins? [IMG] I am starting to see the contract trains that the news release said that was suppose to take effect October 15. They are IC trains or I should say a lot of IC stuff in these trains. They just took this a little further than the vehicle trains and I think both railroads are going to reap the benefits.

Well personally I see no need for a merger .
What could be done and should be done is just share trackage and try to create some new business that way .

Try running some trains on eachothers tracks and keep it simple .

I agree with Dave too...merger bad, sharing good!! In my lifetime I have seen all of my favorite roads merged into other roads, or simply swallowed. Yes, they live on in some way and I understand the need for mergers as a means of keeping business strong. But I sure do miss those fallen flags!! Anyway, I do not see what good a merger would do in this case. Happy Modeling!

Wasn't the close cooperation between BN and ATSF what led to the BNSF merger? Is this a case of history repeating itself?

This CN Engine was in the Los Angeles Area on Sat. 4/21/01. I first saw it at work as it passed through Hobart Yard, they got pictures after work at Watson Yard.

BNSF and CN said they might try again after the STB gets their head out of thier butts. Read the article in trains magazine about it. it is the cover story. BNSF said they may try again with a another cooperating railroad. If not the CN. This from the CEO of the BNSF.

    THIS IS PURE RUMOUR!!!
What I have heard is that CN wants Kansas City Southern because it will give CN access to Mexico. It is actually more interested in the Mexican portion of this railroad. So they could run trains from Canada to Mexico, which is what they really want to do.

The STB will just deny it again if they try, I think the STB is not going to let any big roads merge, just because of all the problems that have happened it the last few years (not just with UP). CN already owns IC, and a part of KCS/TFM's stock, and has run through agreements with them, but an official merger is far fetched. Don't forget thet our Vice President is on UP's board of directors, so if any mergers are to happen in the next 8 years, it will most likely UP taking over CSX, NS, or Rail America. (But I doubt any mergers will happen).

I read it that BNSF is looking to merge with someone it might not be CN. It is in the Trains new issue. I think they are more or less sizing up the competeion. They say right now BNSF is the best railroad being run today. Exspecially after everyone else botched there mergers. I think the STB wants to keep the competion high. Buts thats kind of hard to do. with UP CSX and NS still not getting thier jobs done the best they can be. they are all still having trouble with on time delivery. BNSF is way above the rest when it comes to on time deliveries. The STB fears another merger would put BNSF way over the top in my opinion. They know how to merge a railroad. They were way much better in merging the Santa Fe. The UP screwed up when they tried to merge 2 railroads in 5 years. If they even try another merger they will go belly up right know. shoot they can't get the mess thier in right know straighten up.
