While bringing some power to the Pasco roundhouse on Thursday I saw a BN green C30-7 sitting off to the side, it was not patched with BNSF or any other marks. It was missing its numberboards, some of its hood doors were open and it was missing a few battery box covers. I think it was numbered 5097 or something close to that. It deffinitly did not look to be in running condition. Does anyone know anything about this unit?

It can't be 5097. That unit was sent to Brazil in December 2003, regauged to 1.6 metres, and is now Ferrovias Norte Brazil 9256.

Maybe a donated loco? Or it's heading out here to CEECO for someone?

I know in Alliance, Ne BNSF has an older loco next to the roundhouse for power generation. It looks rough, never moves and the I think some of the doors are hanging open. Not saying this is the same thing, just an idea. How long has this loco been sitting in Pasco?

There are two C-30-7s and 2 U-30-Cs residing in Alliance. They are set up to be used as alternative power generators for the Alliance Mehanical Facility. Some have the middle traction motors removed. They are set up to accept power cables that are connected to the diesel shop. I have some pics but cannot post them at this time. They aren't in their best cosmetic condition.

HMMM, mabey it is set up as a generator, it did not look like it was in transit or anything. When I get back down there hopefully it will still be there.

It's funny to me that C30-7s and U30C's are retired and turned into generators while first gen Geeps and SD40s are still in revenue service.

    Kevin,
That unit has been sitting there for years. There used to be a longer line of power there, including a bunch of Santa Fe painted stuff.

The GEs were saved because the system was designed for use with a GE locomotive. BNSF let the lease expire on the older GEs as more MACs were aquired. The reason behind that move was so there would be a smaller parts inventory maintained at the repair facility. More than one GE was set aside so there would be a local supply of spare parts when repairs would be necessary. System wide, EMDs outnumbered the GEs by quite a large margin. Also, the GEs were meant for coal service, not general freight service. So they were the first be returned to the lessor. The EMDs would fit in system wide while the GEs wouldn't.

As for the red X, I don't think I was uploading pics correctly.
