Why not do a black and white theme? A M-MINMIN Minot-Williston manifest struggles against the interminable headwind and the tonnage of 90+ cars of mixed freight, and only a pair of rebuild Geeps to provide motive power. It's hard to see in this image, but the wind was blowing super hard at Gassman Coulee. Per BNSF System Special Instruction 33, there was a 55 MPH speed restriction all the way to MP 90, due to the high wind warning. The winds were sustained above 50 MPH and gusting over 70 MPH that day, with a peak gust in Minot clocked at 74 MPH! Photo from private property, with permission. Mixed freight passes thru CP2030 at MP 203.0, BNSF KO Sub. A set of doublestacks is bad ordered in a spur at right. And color, but still black and white, a pair of Catfish lead a westbound V-train out of the old GN yard in Minot:
Black & white photography -- a fun and timely theme @HemiAdda2d. Two here. The first of Es at Chicago's North Western Station from about 1975 and the other of C-420s in service on the L&N at Knoxville from November 1976. Kodak Plus-X film.
Kodak Plus X was my black and white film of choice back in the day. 10 units (some dead in tow) bring an east coal train through Lancaster CA.
Plus X again, this time an east flying over Lancaster Blvd. This shot was used in Rail Classic's magazine 30 years ago.
As late as 1992 I was still shooting black and white film. Most of my soccer photography was still black and white for the newspapers so I always had some in my camera bag 59 104, seen at Westbury in April 1992 was one of four EMD Class 59s ordered by ARC limited to haul the heavy stone trains coming out of the Mendip quarries.Delivered in 1990 they were all named after villages local to the area. These followed the five that Foster Yeoman had delivered in 1989 for the same traffic. All were built in London, Ontario. Little did we know that these would be the precursors to the ubiquitos Class 66s that now dominate the UK railfreght sector. Kev
Three tunnel motors running elephant style, bring an east onto the Palmdale/Colton cutoff. Palmdale CA.
While we are discussing all things Black The LMS 'Black 5' 4-6-0. One of the best mixed traffic locomotives ever to run on British railways. Always painted black. designed by Sir William Stanier and introduced in 1934 ,842 were in built in total There is a tale to this photo. Preserved 44767 'George Stephenson' was a variation of the standard design with outside Stephenson link valve gear and running on Timken roller bearings. Seen at Tapton Junction in May 1993 on a railtour, this photo was taken on a hand held Mamiya RB 67 medium format roll film camera which was a big heavy lump and was rather like swinging a house brick around! Because the 120 roll film ( Fuji Reala) had to be manually advanced and then the shutter cocked, in effect, you only had one shot at a moving train. The rest of the photographers on Tapton Footbridge looked at this bit of kit in amazement Kev
Shot from my drivers side window, an SP east train crosses Ave. M at the siding at Denis. Lancaster CA.
Late 80's finds me standing near tunnel 9 at the Tehachapi Loop, as west SP train approaches. The silhouette's of a Tunnel Motor and a Flare 45 show as the sun goes down.
B&W-ified CP MLW S-3 6591 with a very old wood box car with outside braces: Used GIMP to desaturate, bring up the shadows, and even add a little graininess. And yes, it's operated regularly. Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario, Smiths Falls, ON, August 2013.
On Tuesday, I caught this former Cotton Belt GP60 active in the yard at Hearne again. It has somehow avoided a trip to the paint booth for almost 30 years after the UP takeover.
Those Class 59's and Class 60's a really cool Kev! Thanks for sharing this one. Would love to see more of them.
I'll do a thread on EMD built locos in the U.K at some stage . Since Ed Burkhartd bought hundreds when he took over EWS there are a lot of them now. Keep an eye on the International rail threads in the Ready Track
Well, I guess a 90-car train with only 2 Geeps at the point must have been far slower than the 55 mph-limit.. Dom
